As we prepare to celebrate Independence Day with friends and family, the need for quality meat products becomes more important than ever. With nearly 8 out of 10 shoppers adjusting their meat purchases due to rising costs and inflation, it’s crucial to be vigilant in our shopping habits. Traditional meat packaging often leads to waste and higher costs, impacting our wallets and the environment. So what can you do to "shop smarter" when it comes to meat products? 🤔 🔎 Look for Vacuum Packaging: This offers an airtight barrier against oxygen, preserving freshness up to 20% longer and reducing food waste. 🥩 Understand the Real Color of Freshness: Fresh meat is actually purple! Imagine walking into your local grocery store to buy snacks for the week. You grab a bag of chips and head to the checkout, but just as you reach for your wallet, you notice a small traffic light symbol on the back of the bag. Green, for go. Yellow, proceed with caution. And red, for stop. You quickly scan the ingredients and see a yellow light, indicating that some of the components may not be your healthiest option. This scenario is a familiar one for many of us, as we've all grown used to seeing calorie counts and other nutritional information on our food packaging. But what if we had access to the same level of information for all of the products we buy, not just the food we eat? That's where life cycle assessment (LCA) comes in. LCAs are an in-depth analysis of a product's impact on the environment, from the extraction of raw materials to the disposal of the final product. This information can then identify areas where the product could be made more sustainable and help consumers make informed decisions about the products they buy. For example, let's say you're in the market for a new washing machine. You have a few options, but you need to figure out which is the most environmentally friendly. With LCA information readily available, you could easily compare each washing machine's life cycle impact and decide based on which one has the lowest environmental impact. By accessing LCA information, consumers can drive demand for more sustainable products. The more we demand sustainable products, the more likely companies will invest in making their products more environmentally friendly. So let's imagine a future where all our purchases are informed by LCA data, just like the traffic light symbols on the back of our snack bags. A future where we have the information we need to make intelligent choices, both for our well-being and the planet. That's a future worth working towards, isn't it? #ACLCA #LCA #sustainability #information #goal

Our CEO, Paul Boyle, recently sat down with Deniz Ataman from FoodNavigator to discuss food waste in retail. Some key talking points: 🛒 79% of shoppers have moved to more sustainable shopping habits over the past 12 months, so retailers need to stand up and take note. 🏪 33% of shoppers are shopping at discounted grocery stores for near-expired food. As a result, the call for retailers to maximise their discounting strategy is clear. 🏷️ Only 42% of retailers are using dynamic markdown processes. Not only are they losing revenue, but they aren’t offering the optimal discounts for their customers. 📊 Retailers need to leverage data to make better decisions. In doing so, you can reduce food waste, offer the sustainable choices that customers are after and support ESG targets with reduced CO2 emissions. Did you know that grocery retailers are among the most value-chain-dependent sectors in the economy, with 97% of their emissions produced upstream in supply chains or downstream with customers? These emissions are known as Scope 3 emissions. For companies, they present a significant challenge to measure and decrease due to their indirect nature and lack of control by the manufacturer or retailer. Despite challenges, the food industry is committed to reducing food waste and environmental impacts. Let's all avoid food waste! 💚 At 3Bears sustainability is always our focus of attention and by offering a food product we of course also have to deal with best before dates. Throwing away food is fully against our values, which is why we decided to introduce a new category in our online shop, in which customers can shop products with a shorter or an exceeded best before date for a lower price. This is a win-win-situation for both sides – us and our customers: ➡️ It helps us to reduce our food waste and attract new customers thanks to lower prices. ➡️ Our customers can save money and may try new products. How would you deal with this topic? We are happy to hear your suggestions 😊 #stopfoodwaste #sustainability #savefood #eatsmart #reduceyourfootprint #wasteless #3bears

60% of food waste comes from our homes. For consumers, buying loose is a simple way individuals can cut down their #FoodWaste, but the study also found that retailers have the opportunity to drive and deliver real change. Estelle Herszenhorn, our Head of Food System Transformation, speaks to Sustainability Journalist, Tom Idle, about the findings from our UK Behavioural Insight Study, Unpacking Fresh Fruit and Veg. She shares key recommendations for retailers, including removing best before date labels, engaging customers on the benefits of buying loose and providing customers with best practice guidance on storage. Daily Sustainability Tip #182 *Buy fresh bread * Ideal is not to use bakery items as they consumer lot of heat in process. However, if you need to buy bread occasionally, prefer to buy fresh from nearby bakery as many times they do not use packaging material. You can carry it in your own bag or wrap around paper. #sustainability #sustainablepractices

Taxes on alcohol, #sugar, and tobacco increased the visibility of these elements and their effects on our health. Adding a fee or a callout on labels and store shelves helped customers think about the consequences of consumption and exposure and reduce both. A store in Germany is now introducing and testing a "climate cost" model in their #retail prices. The products that pollute the most or use more energy to be transported and produced will cost more than #sustainable or lower-impact alternatives. Will this be the key to creating awareness of climate's impact and the actual cost of our food? #futureoffood #futureofretail
Is a ‘climate cost’ model set to shake up supermarkets’ sustainability stances?
