Project Lead for Placemaking Great Ormond Street Hospital | NLA Healthcare, Design Council

At Great Ormond Street we are working on a long-term vision to transform a polluted and traffic dominated street into one with a high ecological value, creating a healing, biophilic environment which also enhances climate resilience. We are also working on short-term pilot projects such as the installation of a parklet so we can experience at a smaller scale the potential effect of a greener, healthier and more people friendly street. Our aim was for the parklet, fabricated by Yes Make, to be moveable so it could be relocated or borrowed by the community, and we recently had the opportunity to test this out. It has been moved to our new entrance on Guilford Street. It now forms part of the @GOSH Arts #WildImaginarium artwork by Usman Haque and Ling Tan of @HAQUE TAN co-designed with children and young people from the Hospital School, introducing the use of generative AI as a way for children to push the boundaries of their imagination. Never the same, #WildImaginarium’s plants, both physical and digital, respond to the seasons and weather over time. As someone who has had the ‘user experience’ of Great Ormond Street, I was always longing for the building to change its street face. It always seems so serious, so old fashioned and so unmistakeably central London (= serious specialist care) which made it a building difficult to approach with positivity and resilience - something innate to peadiatric care. Wishing the team the very best and I hope this project improves outcomes for what goes on inside too 💚

Magali Thomson love it! I establised a similar process for the wider Pocket Park Framework and evidenced it through a pocket park we trialed at Roberts Place, Islington, built by Yes Make and funded through Central District Alliance It is now due to be relocated to another location for community test and learn. Test and Learn of highways spaces is key to unlocking future potential of community engagement with more established pocket park interventions. Wish you well in your next steps!

I did a London wander along Great Ormond Street and was struck that the area is becoming greener, more tree's than I remembered. The area from Coram Fields, Lambs Conduit, Great Russell, Brunswick - where GOSH and the Neurology hospital sit - is a distinct district that could be further improved for patients, visitors, residents, supportive businesses. Leisure (not patient) car reduction is definitely needed within that grid. Aside, It doesn't always need to large things to green either - small incremental ideas by the neighbourhood (eg bird box/foliage on street lamps, pollinator environments) too. Good luck with the project!
