A podcast needs a brand of its own. And branded shows are no exception. Your show needs a voice, personality, vision, growth plan, and unique design elements. Just like a brand. I’ve seen way too many companies try to create a podcast that gets lost in the noise of an existing brand rather than making a show that can stand on its own. When you start to shift your thinking to seeing a podcast as a brand–a product you have to build and grow–you open the door for more creativity, innovation, and growth. Yes, the podcast may be attached to your brand, a stream of marketing and brand building, but the audio medium is amazing at achieving all of those things without having to be one giant billboard for your company. It’s a unique and special medium, treat it that way. Step #6 on the Path to Profitability: Keep Showing Up I was listening to Jay-Z accept his award at the Grammys, and although his speech wasn't exactly a masterclass, he said one thing that really stood out: "Keep showing up." We discussed how best to show up with Performance Marketing World. And as we head to Vegas for the Super Bowl, it marks the pinnacle for both marketers and football fans. While some may disagree that it is the pinnacle (for marketers), we all take the time to lean in and watch the ads. Do you really pay attention to commercials or stunts like this any other time of year? “If I had a $100M budget, I could do the same.” Probably true but we don’t. And it still doesn't diminish the fact that over 100 million eyeballs will be watching some great (and not so great) marketing efforts. But what do the rest of us do? This is juxtaposed with the fact that I've been noticing a lot of posts about CMOs being disconnected from other executives, or struggling to be creative because the more creative you are, the less attribution you receive. Moreover, with each policy update on their main digital channels, they are scrambling to find new ways to excel in marketing. I certainly feel it too. It feels daunting. We've always known, as marketers, that there's a bit of black magic to what we do. However, one thing I keep doing to stay sane is to ask some fundamental questions: 🗣 Where is the audience I want to reach? 🥅 What are their intentions when they are there? What are they afraid of? What makes them mad? 🚦 Am I giving them enough time and space to recognize the value? ⚓ What is currently changing in their space and how are they thinking about it? 🔇 Am I the one showing trust and listening to what they are saying first and foremost? 🎸 How can I create something so awesome that they would feel dumb to refuse? 🔓 How can I help them achieve their goals? Even when you do all of these things, you might still get a 'no' or worse, no response...WTF?! A myriad of questions and feelings run through your head. But the real lesson, especially felt in the startup space, is whether you got back up, learned your lesson, and tried again. So, I will be showing up in Vegas this week. Let's exchange some stories over a beverage and plot our new Super Bowl commercial.
Is the Super Bowl the main event for advertisers? In the latest Performance Marketing Unlocked podcast episode, Kyle Christensen, CMO at Splash Inc., talks about what brands should be doing either side of the Super Bowl LVIII. At one of the highest CPM's in the industry (between $6.5m and $7m) advertisers are under pressure to make the biggest – and longest lasting – impact. As previous head marketer at Facebook and Netflix, he talks about connecting with communities and how to have a compelling idea that extends beyond the Super Bowl, as well as what it's like to be at the drawing board for a huge entertainment platform. Listen to the full episode in the link in comments, or wherever you get your podcasts by searching 'Performance Marketing Unlocked'!
