The Federal Transportation Administration has agreed to provide the remaining $6.88 billion needed to fund the $16 billion Hudson Tunnel Project. This long-delayed and controversial infrastructure project could begin construction as early as this year, with work potentially starting in 2024. Office of Texas Governor Greg Abbott announced a $142 billion investment into #Texas infrastructure, including $100 billion earmarked for the Texas Department of Transportation state roadways plan. Kiewit-Shea JV nabs $1B Baltimore Amtrack tunnel contract: As part of the $6 billion effort to replace the Baltimore and Potomac Tunnel, which poses the biggest bottleneck on the Northeast Corridor. Amtrak selected the Kieweit and J.F. Shea Construction joint venture to build the Frederick Douglass Tunnel in Baltimore; the second of three major components in a $6 billion program to replace the 150-year-old Baltimore & Potomac Tunnel. The aging B&P Tunnel has experienced excessive water infiltration and a sinking floor, and poses the largest bottleneck between Washington, D.C., and New Jersey. Following on from confirmation that the government is scrapping the northern section of HS2, Emma Antrobus AMICE, director at the Institution of Civil Engineers North West shares her thoughts:       “Today’s announcement, to axe the northern leg of HS2, underlines a lack of ability to grapple with and deliver major transformational infrastructure projects. “What has been put forward in its place, badged as the Network North, needs to be evaluated to understand what the true benefits will be together with the timescales for delivery. “The ICE has been calling for a national transport strategy for England, backed by a clear investment plan, to ensure that the whole of the country gets the transport infrastructure it needs now - and in future. “Without a clear plan, we are stuck with a piecemeal approach ignoring the bigger picture, and never realising the full societal and economic benefits that transformational infrastructure projects can deliver. “We need to regroup around a systems thinking approach and look to our experts including the National Infrastructure Commission to guide planning and investment.” #Infrastructure #HS2 #CivilEngineering
