🐮 ProFuse Technology launches PROFUSE-B8, a bovine cell line enabling indefinite cell division without genetic engineering for cultivated meat PROFUSE-B8 is highly efficient in both proliferation and differentiation phases, with the cell line demonstrating stable performance over a year and after 90 passages. This stability positions it as an ideal, non-GMO building block for muscle production systems. When combined with ProFuse Tech's media supplement, PROFUSE-S1, the cell line enables higher yields, shorter production cycles, and substantial cost reductions. Beyond beef, the Israeli startup is developing additional cell lines for pork, lamb, chicken, and fish with the same spontaneously immortalised characteristics. Our portfolio company Mission Barns, founded in 2018 by Dr. Eitan Fischer, is leading the way in cultivated fat and meat from its San Francisco base. Mission Barns is cultivating fat rather than muscle, which has several benefits. For one, it significantly reduces production costs, as fat cells primarily require glucose, making the process more economical. Additionally, fat cells are more uncomplicated to cultivate than muscle cells. As fat carries much taste, Mission Barns can create amazing hybrid products, mostly vegan, with a small percentage of animal-free animal fat, tasting much better than current plant-based meat alternatives. Currently, Mission Barns currently produces pig fat, but their bioreactor system is adaptable across various species and could be applied to muscle cells as well. This innovation promises a more sustainable future for meat production and showcases Mission Barns as a key player in the cultivated meat revolution.

GreenVenus, a prominent player in the field of agriculture technology, has joined hands with Plant Research (NZ) LTD to develop innovative field pea varieties that can offer better nutrition and climate resilience. The primary objective of this partnership is to disrupt the plant protein market, which is currently dominated by soy, by introducing high-quality pea proteins that are allergen-free and have superior amino acid compositions. The collaboration will leverage GreenVenus's Primavera™ gene editing technology and machine learning to create cultivars that can adapt quickly to climate changes while meeting industry standards for clean, taste-neutral proteins. By addressing challenges such as beany flavor and indigestibility in peas, the initiative is poised to facilitate the shift towards sustainable plant-based proteins, which can significantly reduce carbon footprints. The development of high-yield pea varieties is expected to increase grower profitability and provide consumers and the animal feed sector with superior protein options. The Asian Productivity Organization (APO) Secretariat is now accepting candidates for participants to the Workshop on Advancing Gene Editing in the Agrifood Sector, to be implemented from 25 to 27 September 2024 via Virtual Session. Gene editing represents a significant advance in agricultural biotechnology, offering a precise method to enhance plant, fish, and animal breeds to improve the quality and productivity of agricultural products. According to the FAO (2022), it can contribute to increasing crop yields, enhancing nutritional profiles, and bolstering environmental resilience. Gene editing allows for more precise modifications compared with traditional breeding methods, potentially reducing the time and cost associated with developing new varieties or breeds. In the Asia-Pacific region, where genetically modified crops have seen limited adoption due to time, cost, and market requirements, gene editing could be particularly beneficial due to its lower development costs and potentially more straightforward regulatory processes. For developing countries, this technology offers an opportunity to tailor agricultural products to meet specific national needs, addressing issues like food security and nutrition while considering socioeconomic impacts and environmental sustainability. This workshop aims to understand gene-editing applications in the agrifood sector; learn from best practices in product design, development, and market introduction; and discuss strategies and actions for advancing gene-editing applications in APO members. Target participants are government officials, policymakers, senior researchers, and executives of farmers’/agribusiness associations involved in the development and adoption of innovations in the agrifood sector for food security and agricultural productivity. Even as we struggle with a growing population and erratic climate change patterns, #biotechnology helps ensure food security. The advantages are seen in improved rice yield, increased nutritional content in tomatoes and a longer shelf-life for bananas. Despite the benefits, its subset — the genetically modified crop — carries ethical and environmental risks, calling for viable alternatives. Plaksha University’s Assistant Professor, Dr. Navjot Kaur, explores the possibilities of adopting gene-editing technologies in her latest article for The Hindu Business. “This would entail effective #stakeholder engagement from the initial stages of #technology development and objectively assessing the potential risks associated with gene-edited crops. Loss of #biodiversity and the threat of monopoly in seed ownership are issues that warrant attention.
