Since 1960, the Paralympic Games have challenged notions of disability, and what began as a movement with just 400 athletes, has grown to 4,400 across 22 sports. Outstanding performances from Paralympians like Natalie du Toit, the first amputee swimmer to compete in both the Olympic and Paralympic Games, and Abdellatif Baka, a visually impaired runner who not only broke the 1500m T13 world record, but ran it 1.71 seconds faster than the Olympic gold medallist that same year, help prove to the world that firsts go beyond the podium. How will Australia deliver on the vision to #WinWell? Day 2 of #WC2WB kicked off today with a panel conversation unpacking what it means and what it takes to win well. Paralympic athletes Vanessa Low OAM and Angie Ballard talked about the importance of knowing athletes individually, finding ways for each athlete to be at there best when it matters most. The pursuit of “winning well” in a Paralympic context [and arguably every context with the aim of optimising human performance] requires understanding the person, their impairment and unique needs for unlocking performance. A few takeaways on how to go the distance in pursuit of excellence in sport: ✅Value people beyond their performance. ✅ Keep the bigger plan in mind ✅ There is always something that can be done to improve. Keep moving forward. ✅The joy of sport is in the here and now. Don’t just look at the results. Enjoy the process. Paralympics Australia Australian Sports Commission #highperformance #paris2024

The power of teamwork is unmatched. Visually impaired runner Libby Clegg and Paralympic guide, Chris Clarke, ran wrist to wrist, perfectly synchronized, and won gold in the 100-meter and 200-meter races at the Paralympic Games in 2016. Clarke didn’t qualify for England’s national team and couldn’t compete in the 2016 Olympics, but his journey wasn’t over. He and Clegg trained for two months together so the competition would feel as natural as possible—and it paid off! We’re highlighting remarkable #womeninsports history leading up to #Paris2024.
