This Climate Resilience Implementation Guide from U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development ... doing great work btw ... provides step-by-step instructions to assist communities in implementing mobility improvements to decarbonize their transportation systems, build resilience, and adapt to the impacts of natural hazards. When it comes to Affordability ... Walking, biking, and using public transit are among the lowest-cost forms of transportation. Decreased transportation costs can increase overall affordability for community members, allowing them to allocate more resources for other household necessities. #affordablehousing #affordability #climateresilience #householdbudget https://lnkd.in/g9stW6db

Our UK Associate Director of Sustainability Sarah Daly spoke with Social Housing about the necessity for registered providers to implement a comprehensive asset management strategy when addressing climate resilience and adaptation. Read more: https://bit.ly/3UKAb8x According to the latest government statistics for winter 2023, the rainfall in December totalled 172 percent of the 1961 to 1990 long-term average. This has led to increasing challenges for landlords from flooding and the trauma that flooding causes for their tenants. In this piece, Sarah emphasises the value of data and explores how it can identify and predict which properties could be at risk of such issues. Sarah stresses the consequences of ignoring the risks of climate change and proposes strategies for registered providers to adopt and address the key role data can have in improving housing situations. Sarah says: “Climate change is not a future threat. It is happening in real-time and will continue to present increased threats to lives, livelihoods and property until we learn to anticipate and fully plan for all the required adaptations” #SocialHousing #ClimateChange #UKHousing

‘Stepping stones – Providing shelter, Enabling Independence in an Eco-nomical home’.... Our VISION: To retrofit our property into a home that is more energy efficient, reducing the amount of energy needed and improving how well heat is stored. Waltham Forest’s housing stock has a significant amount of energy inefficient and old properties. Around 70% of domestic properties are built before 1944, and 51% of the borough’s carbon emissions are caused by heating and providing power to homes (WF council website). Retrofit involves improving existing homes and buildings to make them more energy efficient, which is better for the environment in the long run, tackling the climate emergency and fuel poverty. #retrofit #steppingstones #brancheshostel #hostellife #e17 #moveonproperty #economical #eco-friendly #providingshelter #enablingindependence #independentliving #lifeskills #watchthispace #followour journey #bridgingthegap #costofliving #housingcrisis #homelessness #sustainableliving #sustainability #energyefficient #branchesmoveon #housingneeds #housingmatters 🏗

🏡 Affordable Housing: A Crucial Shield Against Climate Challenges With projections showing up to 2.8 billion people facing heatwaves by 2090, the urgency for affordable housing has never been clearer. Southern Asia alone could see 1.3 billion at risk, with 59.7 million already displaced due to climate impacts in the last decade. 🌍 Beyond basic needs, affordable housing emerges as a cornerstone in climate resilience. As heatwaves escalate and climate-induced displacements rise, affordable homes become a crucial solution, offering stability and security for vulnerable populations. 🌱 Affordable housing isn't just about providing shelter; it's an investment in sustainable futures. Prioritising climate-resilient and affordable homes contribute to community well-being, offering a robust foundation to weather the challenges of a changing climate. 💡 These staggering numbers underscore the need for collective efforts. Governments, organisations, and communities must unite to develop and support affordable housing solutions resilient to the impacts of climate change. It's not merely about constructing homes; it's about building resilience. 🤝 Share your insights on the crucial connection between affordable housing and climate resilience. Let's foster discussions leading to actionable solutions and advocate for homes that can withstand the tests of the future. #AffordableHousing #ClimateResilience #actionism #climatesmart

Title: Community-Driven Transitions, the Next Step in Climate Resilience Planning. Over the past two years, communities across the state have been actively engaged in community-driven resilience planning through the Community Resilience Partnership enrollment process. This initiative has empowered community members to take charge of their future in the face of challenges and impacts created by the climate crisis. However, our current capitalist system often sidelines the voices of those most affected by economic decisions, allowing outside interests to interfere in local economies. This calls for a fundamental reevaluation of how we approach community planning. Enter CDRT (Community-Driven Recovery and Transition), a transformative planning scenario that disrupts the traditional emergency management cycle. Moving beyond mitigation, preparedness, response, and recovery, CDRT aims to transition communities towards a future where everyone's basic needs are met, and local economies thrive. CDRT utilizes disaster or catastrophic planning scenarios to convene diverse teams and construct a framework for a resilient, just, and sustainable future. Drawing inspiration from permaculture design and guided by principles of economic democracy and neohumanism, sector teams collaboratively develop frameworks that reflect deeply held community values. Through integration of these frameworks, CDRT facilitates the creation of a unified plan for recovery and transition, fostering resilience and prosperity for all members of the community. Shri A. I was reading this article for the solution hinted at in the headline. But what grabbed and shook me was this section: “To protect women selling in the city’s 42 markets – mostly open-air street stalls – from extreme heat, polycarbonate shades were installed in some of them, in partnership with Climate Resilience for All. After the materials were damaged by a windstorm, city officials are now seeking alternatives that can withstand multiple climate risks.” Real people facing and so far struggling to react to ‘multiple climate risks’. This situation underscores the urgent need for holistic, resilient infrastructure that can adapt to our rapidly changing environment. It’s not just about addressing one problem—it’s about anticipating the interconnected challenges of our time. This is real, hard and urgent. Do we all appreciate what we face, no matter where we live? Are we prepared to design with resilience in mind? #climatechange

Report: you should be charged for paving your garden 💸 Do we want our cities to be like sponges, or rocks? 🧽 The London Climate Resilience Report is out. It's a sobering review of the impact of changing climate on the capital. Some highlights (lowlights?): • 43% of houses could be affected by subsidence by 2030 • Climate change could impact London’s GDP by 2-3% every year by the 2050s • Climate impacts in London happen together. The 40°C heatwave occurred at the same time as drought and wildfires, and heatwaves are often followed by flash flooding Hence the idea to offer penalties and incentives for paving over your garden. We need to connect our own decisions with the effect on our homes, neighbourhoods and cities as a whole. We need to reverse the trend for fake grass and paved drives, and find new ways for people to enjoy practical, affordable, enjoyable gardens - that also make our city spongier and more resilient. 🌳 We're starting to look at this at Hubbub and I'd welcome more conversations about it. ☎️ Read the review here: https://lnkd.in/dnVzP_Hq P.S. I'm CEO of environmental charity Hubbub. We bring business, government and civil society together to create campaigns that inspire & support people to make choices that are good for the environment. Abundance in housing in walkable neighborhoods is a solution for… - Homelessness, - Economic inequality, - AND climate change! Those of us working on GHG mitigation should also be supporting policies for more housing density, missing middle housing, eliminating exclusionary zoning, 15 minute cities, as well as pushing back on local NIMBYs.
