We celebrate the ratification of the Maritime Labor Convention 2006 in Ecuador! This historic milestone represents a firm commitment to protecting the rights and welfare of seafarers worldwide. But what does the ratification of the MLC, 2006 mean? It is a fundamental instrument of the International Labor Organization (ILO) that establishes a unique legal framework to guarantee decent working conditions for seafarers. This Convention covers various aspects such as Freedom of association, fair working conditions and protection against discrimination, social security, medical care, welfare and protection in case of accidents or illness, and Obligations of shipowners, masters and governments to ensure compliance with the Convention. Some FoC registers are better than others, but the very existence of the system creates a lack of transparency and accountability that lowers standards and harms seafarers. according to the ITF, workers onboard FoC vessels are more likely to experience: - very low wages - poor onboard conditions - inadequate food and clean drink water - long periods of woks without proper rest, leading to stress and fatigue. Day of the Seafarer is an annual celebration organised by the International Maritime Organisation (IMO) to recognise the contribution that seafarers make to our everyday lives. The role of seafarers often goes under-appreciated within the maritime industry and by the general public. Seafarers are an essential component in world trade, keeping the economy moving and delivering the goods and fuels we use every day. Day of the Seafarer was first held in 2010 following the publication of a revised set of international laws (MLC) which were agreed to ensure that all seafarers receive the same levels of training, general welfare and safety standards. It is hoped that by holding the Day of the Seafarer, the general public will become more aware of the role that seafarers play in their lives and why they are so fundamental in determining the prosperity of the worldwide economy.

🏨🥗💸🫷👨💻 Is it OK for an employer to refuse to cover accommodation and meal costs for a training event, when the training is available as webinar? According to the German Works Constitution Act (Betriebsverfassungsgesetz - BetrVG), employers are obliged to give works council members paid leave for training events if the training is “required” for the tasks of the works council. In addition, the employer is obliged to cover the costs of further training. Online training courses (webinars) are often cheaper because there are no travel and accommodation costs. In this case, the German federal labour court had to decide whether an employer can refuse to cover accommodation and meal costs based on the fact that the works council members could have taken part in a cheaper webinar with the same content. This piece is my critique on current university ranking system with focus in Indonesia which put a little care on student's welfare. Here, I advocating for the importance of student's welfare to be added as indicators in the ranking process as the student's welfare heavily influence academic performance, in which such performance determine the university's power projection. It is necessary for ranking agencies to pressure universities to create accountable and transparent financial reports. Thus, ranking agencies can measuring university ranking based on the ratio of the income to tuition fees so that the existing ranking system is truly applied proportionally to assess the efficiency and effectiveness of universities in managing the existing resources.
