The waterways and canals were the main trade routes of this country for centuries and should be rightly utilised again. This is where the government should be investing to free up space on our overcrowded motorways.

Tugs, barges, and ships are exposed to unique risks while transiting inland waterways, and the proper management of inland waterway transportation is vital for cargo safety and risk mitigation. Claims resulting from delays, salvage equipment costs, tugs, underwater surveys, etc., can be substantial, and the preparedness of equipment and vigilance/preparedness of mariners are crucial to preventing losses and mitigating exposure if an incident occurs. The American P&I Club maintains an "Inland Waterways" webpage featuring best practices guidance documents that address ship anchoring and mooring considerations in U.S. rivers during high water conditions and barge fleeting area issues. It’s time for a National Shipyard. As a farer nation we need to think about developing a shipyard which is capable of processing a decent amount of steel per year as well as repair capacity for the same. MTCC happened to be having anything close to a shipyard with repair capabilities. Recently, we have witnessed news articles in mainstream media about Maldives Ports Limited(MPL) is on the verge of developing a dockyard similar to MTCC Shipyard. This may be duplication of vital national resources instead the government must be having a plan for the unification of these vital resources to ensure synergy is attained. My take here is to create a joint venture among interested state owned enterprises and invest on a shipyard that can match or exceed capabilities of any regional shipyard. That’s way forward.
