On the drive to the U.S. Embassy of Kenya I practiced saying Chargé d'affaires. As a Deafblind American, pronouncing French words has always been tough. Then Chargé d'affaires Eric Kneedler welcomed Victor Calise and I to Nairobi, telling us we could call him Eric! Chargé d'affaires is the title the U.S. gives the head of an embassy until an ambassador is appointed by the president. Chargé d'affaires Kneedler has been in Nairobi since 2017, and he shared some of his experiences along with trying to keep up with his favorite football team the Pittsburgh Steelers. The tradition is to stand for formal photos, but since one of us uses a wheelchair I asked if we could all stay seated. Chargé d'affaires Eric Kneedler graciously agreed! Accessibility can be easy, small changes like this! Photo: Chargé d'affaires Eric Kneedler is sitting in the center. He appears to be in his forties, white, and is listening and smiling. Beside him is Victor Calise, Director of Global Culture, Equity and Inclusion at Walmart. He looks like he’s in his late forties, white, wears glasses, and is listening while sitting in a wheelchair. I’m sitting on the left, one hand up gesturing as I’m talking. I’m a black woman in my thirties. My braille computer is on my lap, and my Seeing Eye dog is stretched out on the floor by my feet. Behind us is a large blue backdrop with the US flag on the left, the Kenyan flag on the right, and in the middle is the U.S. Seal. #USEmbassyNairobi #A11yAfrica2022
U R AMAZING HABEN. WE APPLAUD YR DETERMINATION CONGRATULATIONS MADAM ATTORNEY
Thanks for the post. I love that you say for the photo. As well I am an English speaking Canadian who is not deaf and do you think I get these pronunciations. For those that don't know Canada is a bilingual country where french is mandatory in school. Thanks for sharing Marilyn
Thank you for sharing this Haben Girma.
These are important lessons you've all provided here. Thank you so much for this post. 🙏
Amazing how small acts can make a big difference
Haben- Victor Calise's MOPD has done nothing for our deafblind community. MOPD staff knows very well we need conavigator program, yet Calise and his staff did nothing. You needed to be important enough for Calise to notice. The city's wasted millions on lawsuits and ineffective programs under Calise's "leadership". Instead of being fired, he left for a cushy corporate job.
That’s a great photo. Yes I have friends who are scooter and wheelchair users. I know it hurts their necks to have to look up at people standing over them. So I always try to kneel or sit when /if possible. Even for short conversations. 🤟🏽
