Teenager Jenny is the first patient to receive a ‘bladder pacemaker’ in the UK’s first paediatric bladder neuromodulation service at Evelina London Children's Hospital. The service will offer specialist procedures for children and young people with rare bladder conditions, who haven't responded to standard treatment. Bladder neuromodulation, otherwise known as sacral nerve stimulation, is a treatment where the patient has an electrical stimulator device, similar to a pacemaker, surgically implanted into their lower back. Electrode wires run from the device to connect to the nerves from the base of the spine. Once the device is switched on, it sends electrical impulses through the wire to the nerves, to change the nerve messages going to the bladder. These changes prevent incorrect or unwanted nerve messages in the bladder which cause urinary incontinence or a young person not being able to empty their bladder without a catheter. Sinthu is a clinical scientist in neurophysiology and is also undertaking a coaching professional apprenticeship at the Trust. Over 450 nominations were submitted across the country and Sinthu is 1 of 10 to be shortlisted in the health, medical and social care category. Congratulations to Dr Claire Shannon who has been elected the next President of the Royal College of Anaesthetists Dr Shannon, a consultant anaesthetist at Evelina London Children's Hospital, has been Vice President of the College since September 2023 and an elected Council Member since March 2018. She has been the Chair of the College's Clinical Quality and Research Board, playing a leading role in their work to uphold standards in the perioperative pathway (care given around the time of surgery), widening access to research and facilitating more active patient involvement. Claire said: "I am honoured to be elected as the next President of The Royal College of Anaesthetists. These are challenging times in healthcare but there is much to be optimistic about if we continue to listen to our members and work collaboratively to move forward together as a College. As an advocate for doctors in training throughout her long consultant career, Claire has served as a College Tutor, Training Programme Director, Regional Adviser, examiner for the Fellowship of the Royal College of Anaesthetists and deputy Chair of the College's Education, Training and Examinations Board. Amelia was born with a tumour the size of a lemon attached to her heart. She has defied the odds after having chemotherapy and 3 open heart surgeries at Evelina London Children's Hospital. Her mum Weeta said "Amelia is now 4 years old and she's grown into a crazy little monkey who doesn't listen! She's my amazing little hero who has a very strong character. All of the teams who have cared for Amelia are amazing. It's because of Evelina London that she's alive." Congratulations to the 33 volunteers from across Guy’s and St Thomas’ who were recognised for their outstanding long service. Between them they have dedicate more than 275 years to the Trust. The longest serving volunteers are Iris Tomlins and Celia Gibbs, who both volunteer with the chaplaincy. They help with ward visits, listening to patients, helping Eucharistic or specific religious ministry, supporting families, carers, and staff, or sitting by the bedside of dying patients. Charline Forster, volunteer service lead, says: “I am incredibly grateful for the invaluable contributions of our volunteers across the Trust. Our pilot education programme, Aspire 350, equips local students with life skills and development opportunities beyond the school curriculum, whilst offering them a route into NHS careers. Since its launch in schools last February, over 50% of participating students have scored higher grades in their core subject areas. The project, funded by Guy’s & St Thomas’ Charity, works with 40 students across three local secondary schools. Hayley Robinson-Allen, schools widening participation manager and project lead, said: “To see the students develop and come out of their shell has been amazing, and I’m so proud of how far they have all come in just over a year. “Alongside building on life skills, we want to help young people in our local community pursue the careers they want, but perhaps in the careers they didn’t know existed within the NHS. Professor Paul Dargan, professor of clinical toxicology and consultant physician at Guy's and St Thomas', has taken over as President of The European Association of Poison Centres and Clinical Toxicologists (EAPCCT). The purpose of the EAPCCT is to advance international knowledge on effective prevention, diagnosis, and management of poisoning. It recently celebrated its 60th anniversary at the annual congress in Munich which was attended by over 385 delegates from 49 countries. Professor Dargan says: “It is an honour and a privilege to serve as President of the European Association of Poisons Control Centres and Clinical Toxicologists for the next two years. I look forward to working with colleagues from around Europe and in our sister toxicology associations around the world to build on the legacy of the last 60 years, promote clinical toxicology and improve the management of poisoned patients across Europe and throughout the world.” #TeamGSTT #Toxicology

Say hello to catering chef manager Nedko Rusev, otherwise know as 'Chef Ned' 👋 We asked Ned about his role in the retail and hospitality catering team at St Thomas' Hospital. What is your role My role is to manage the chefs and catering staff. I also create recipes, prepare menus, ensure meals are well presented, and work with suppliers to bring the best food on offer to our staff. My team works hard to serve hundreds of hospital staff and patients in a short amount of time every day. Tell us about a typical day I start at 5am with preparing and cooking breakfast. Once breakfast is done I jump onto preparing the salad bar and lunch. As soon as we are done with the lunch I start planning the orders and checking stock. Alongside this I attend meetings, organise theme days, communicate with suppliers, and control budgets. What’s the best thing about your job? The best thing about my job is the challenges.
