On this Memorial Day, we honor those who have served our country, and particular those who have died. It is also an opportunity to reflect on the critical role military medicine has played in advancing healthcare for service members and civilians alike. 🇺🇸 Military medical professionals have developed innovations and best practices that have been translated to benefit patients worldwide. From battlefield care to recent conflicts, military medicine has pioneered lifesaving techniques like tourniquets, blood transfusions, and tactical combat casualty care. Through a focused approach to performance improvement and research, the military has made remarkable strides in a short time. Today, partnerships between military and civilian health systems help ensure these hard-won lessons endure. By working together on training, research, and care delivery, this collaboration strengthens our ability to provide the best possible care to our service members and veterans. With numerous family members in the military, and several who have been deployed overseas during recent conflicts, the very real inherent danger in this work is never far from my mind. Overall, 12.8% of Veterans aged 25–64 had problems paying #medical bills, 8.4% had forgone medical care, and 38.4% were somewhat or very worried about being able to pay their medical bills if they got sick or had an accident. In case you missed it yesterday, exciting news for the veteran community! The Veterans’ Entitlements, Treatment, and Support (Simplification and Harmonisation) Bill 2024 was introduced to Parliament. This is a major step forward in addressing the Royal Commission into Defence and Veteran Suicide's recommendations. If passed, starting 1 July 2026, all new claims will be handled under an improved Military Rehabilitation and Compensation Act 2004 (MRCA). The Veterans’ Entitlements Act 1986 (VEA) and the Safety, Rehabilitation and Compensation (Defence-related Claims) Act 1988 (DRCA) will close to new claims, but existing entitlements will remain unaffected. After identifying veteran suicide as its highest clinical priority, the military is making a major new push to prevent deaths by suicide, with numerous efforts underway both in the Department of Defense (DoD) and the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA). There is good reason for this heightened activity: For decades, suicide rates were lower among active-duty personnel than they were in the general population, but they are now about the same. Veterans, meanwhile, are 1.5 times more likely to die by suicide than nonveteran adults. Medical Care Evidence (treatment and medication history). 3. Established while on Active Duty or Line of Duty for Reserves and National Guard. Adjacent to this; Worsen through service or developed after commitment to service has ended. Fundamentally, that is the coup that took place in Australia, against our democracy, and backed with secrecy by Donald Trump. It started with Soviet moles in the ADF and ASIO. And that's why Australian billionaires like Anthony Pratt and Gina Rhinehart have been hanging off him like blowflies ... And that's also why he attempted an insurrection in the USA ... because he saw what success looks like in Australia.
