Blending is used everywhere and everyday in the process of making finished dosage forms. What is not often considered is the use of co-jet milling to streamline the blending of functional excipients during the particle sizing of the API into a single step. In the attached white paper from our R&D scientists, Christopher Hill and Jason Riggs, show how co-milling can also provide more uniform blending beyond the immediate benefit of increasing process efficiency. Homogeneous mixing and molecular chain disentanglement can be realized in one-cycle extrusion. One cycle instead of multiple cycles for extrusion in many required application areas (fiber spinning, food, medicine, etc.) can accordingly improve production efficiency. Further, the ultra-high L/D ratio technique gives us more opportunities to control the material system. The mechanism is that we can regulate more parameters, especially the screw element types and their configuration. Moreover, in this work, the PAN/DMSO with a 30 wt% concentration can be directly fed into the extruder, and the 24-hour deaeration process required in the batch mixer can be avoided. Afterward, low costs and high efficiency can be realized for the production of carbon fibers.
