In some countries, stiffer legislation is being introduced to curb the epidemic in shoplifting and staff abuse. The UK is drafting standalone laws that will mean anyone assaulting staff will be fined and sent to prison for up to 6 months. And shoplifters may have to wear tags as part of their punishment. These are of course all welcome responses. But they take time to have an effect, and the results might be only a small drop in theft and abuse. For retailers, the best form of defence is high-profile deterrents that clearly tells thieves they are not welcome. Our range of gates and turnstiles transform a store into a welcoming place for customers, give staff the confidence to deliver great service - and give a clear message to lawbreakers to move along. This article is an example of the challenges faced in retail security right now. Someone caught in the act victimizing people and businesses immediately released to go victimize someone else. Even if a retailer takes steps to protect themselves the problem still exists and pushes the victimization onto someone else who cannot protect themselves. This isn’t a retail problem it’s a societal one and we need government to stop the victimization and help people. #retail #lossprevention

A clear and concerning example of why knife crime is so difficult to halt. The knife that this offender is using is a simple kitchen knife…one that every single Australian currently has in their kitchen drawer… & one that is impossible to regulate. The opportunity to conceal a knife in a bag or under clothing, makes it a simple choice of weapon for violent offenders. The increasing use of knives as a weapon is a highly concerning situation for retailers, & this incident reinforces the importance of recognising that any thief, or escalating customer, could have access to a weapon. Great work by this retail worker in the Sydney CBD, who remained calm, & was fully compliant with the armed robber & his demands. The stabbing of an IGA Store Manager trying to stop the theft of a trolley in a Sydney suburb in January earlier this year, was a sad example of how you never know who might be carrying a weapon, how quickly an incident can escalate, & how retail team members must prioritise their safety, & the safety of their customers. No amount of stock or property is ever worth compromising your safety or life for, or the safety of other customers who are also impacted when we put stock loss before personal safety. With Legislation (for example recent Qld laws) helping to prevent the sale of knives to minors, & a move towards police agencies being able to ‘wand’ or use a metal detectors to search people in public places (Jacks Law), we are definitely moving in the right direction with regards to preventative measures. But being that we won’t be able to prevent every offender from carrying this simple & crude weapon, simply sourced from their kitchen, it is crucial that owners & operators of retail stores & other customer facing workplaces provide their teams with the right strategies to remain safe. Some key takeaways for business owners: 1️⃣ Ensure that you have the right security technology in place. - If you use duress alarms, ensure your team understand how & when to use them. - CCTV needs to have a clear purpose, & specific objective. Make sure you consult a qualified subject matter expert to get advice on the right solution. 2️⃣ Ensure that you have a clear procedure for your team with regards to Armed Robberies & incidents like Active Armed Offenders. 3️⃣ There is no point having procedures if your team haven’t seen them. Training (eLearning & Face-to-Face) is crucial & helps your team to understand what they need to do, & helps to create muscle memory. It surprises me that armed robbery training has fallen by the wayside. 4️⃣ Security audits exist for a reason - internal & external assessments will assist in determining where your risks, threats, & vulnerabilities are. You need to know what is wrong, before you fix or implement something. 5️⃣ Engage an appropriate EAP provider that is a fit for your business. Team wellbeing & recovery is so important. #security #retail #armedrobbery #safety #whs #risk #crime #shopping

With crime increasing by more than 140% in its retail stores this year and reports of 1,350 cases of violence against staff in the first six months of 2020, the Co-op was looking for a solution to help protect its staff. This case study is about how the Co-op adopted the VT100 Body-Worn camera to protect its staff. The camera is an integrated, connected solution that enables immediate response to acts of violence and aggression against colleagues. It is simple to use, requires minimal training, and deters antisocial behaviour from the outset. Click the link below to read the full case study. https://lnkd.in/eKTmvFBN

This is UK crime, but the issue relating to the use of images is the same all over the world. Here are the latest crime statistics, including robbery up by 13% and shoplifting up by a record 37%. Once a robber has escaped the vicinity of the crime and the initial police response (experienced offenders do so), the only means of identification is from CCTV or other recording devices. With shoplifting, nearly every offence is caught on camera - but most are never prosecuted - why? There is a lack of systematic use of images to identify thieves and link them to multiple offences (my record was 43 linked by images). My team can help you to catch more criminals by smarter use of images. Why wouldn't you want to know more? MAST’s security report issue 378 is available to read now. In the UK, police have successfully recaptured a terrorism suspect who fled from HMP Wandsworth Prison. There have been several terrorism-related court actions in the period observed across the UK. Co-op stores have begun deploying plain clothes security personnel in an effort to deter shoplifting. Additionally, the shop is using ‘dummy’ products which must be redeemed at cashiers in order to prevent high value items being stolen from shelves. UK retail premises have seen a number of armed robberies and incidents on their property in the last two weeks. Read the full report here... https://lnkd.in/epwW-6qA
