📢 U.S. Steel Corporation and CarbonFree announce a definitive agreement to implement a commercial-scale carbon capture utilization plant at U.S. Steel's Gary Works Blast Furnaces in Indiana. 🏭 The project, utilizing CarbonFree's SkyCycle™ technology, aims to capture and mineralize up to 50,000 metric tons of carbon dioxide annually, equivalent to emissions from nearly 12,000 cars. 🚧 Construction is slated to begin in summer 2024, with operations projected to start in 2026. By definition, it means "the state or fact of being responsible, answerable, or accountable for something within one's power, control, or management." Decarbonization of the steel industry is at the same time a huge challenge and an opportunity for the world ecosystem. ArcelorMittal Belgium is passionate about sustainability and circularity and is playing an absolute pioneering role within industry in terms of the climate transition and CO2 reduction. We are working hard to implement an action plan to reduce CO2 emissions by 35% by 2030 (compared to 2018) and to be climate-neutral by 2050. 🔗🌱 Our action plan focuses on three key axes. The first is to further improve resource and energy efficiency. 💡 The second is to embrace hydrogen as a reducing agent. ArcelorMittal Belgium has two blast furnaces that primarily use carbon to draw oxygen from the iron ore. One of our blast furnaces will be replaced by an installation that uses natural gas and hydrogen to reduce iron ore and by two electric melting furnaces. ⚙️🔧 But that's not all! 🚀 The third axis of our action plan involves the development of 'Smart Carbon concepts' in the heart of the #circulareconomy. We're proud to share that we're making strides in Carbon Capture and Utilization (CCU). For example, our Steelanol installation will convert steel gases into 80 million liters of sustainable ethanol annually. (As seen in the first picture) 🌱🔄 In addition we're replacing fossil carbon with green and circular carbon, such as using waste wood from container parks in our Torero project. In collaboration with Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI) and their CO₂ capturing system, we're testing our CO₂ recycling technology at their Ghent steel plant. D-CRBN’s technology can electrify and decarbonize existing blast furnaces, significantly reducing coal use.
