Rio Tinto will build Canada’s largest solar power plant to supply electricity to its Diavik Diamond Mine in Northwest Territories, the miner said on Thursday. The plant with over 6,600 solar panels will generate approximately 4,200 megawatt-hours of carbon-free electricity annually for the mine. It is expected to provide up to 25% of Diavik’s electricity during closure work that will run until 2029, with commercial production from the operation expected to end in early 2026. The facility will be equipped with bi-facial panels which will not only generate energy from direct sunlight, but also from the light that reflects off the snow that covers Diavik for most of the year. Brilliant to see closed-loop geothermal systems being developed; however, this does appear to highlight the low energy extraction capabilities in comparison to open-loop systems. Assuming this is for 6.9 GWh of thermal energy annually then the average thermal power would be just below 800 kW and it appears the potential could (?) be split between 3 wells (i.e., 200-300 kW per well). Independent analysis at the University of Glasgow of deep, closed-loop systems also predicts similar thermal performance of the Kirby Misperton site and will be made publicly available when papers are published from the World Geothermal Congress. It would be great for CeraPhi to publish the data from the case study to help push the sector forward and improve understanding of deep closed-loop systems. #geothermal #deepgeothermal

Over the last 4 weeks Geothermal Development Company - CeraPhi Energy have received over 200 visitors to our commercial demonstrator in from local community leads, academia, local authority, central government authorities, energy consultants and collaborators. The ability to demonstrate what is known as a low temperature ambient closed loop heat network has the capacity 6.9 gigawatt hours thermal annually from the three wells drilled to a depth 1500 and 2000 meter. As seen in the photo below, our domestic mock up is using the next generation of domestic heat pumps known as a shoebox heat pump made in the #UK by Kensa Heat Pumps. These pumps out perform anything on the market being feed from a constant high efficiency temperature on demand from the deep ambient loop system provides second to none efficiency in the provision of both water for heating radiators and hot water tanks for washing. The footprint of such an energy centre covers no more than 6 meters square when installed and provides significant energy on demand for infinity. If you would like to know more about the next generation of heat networks, get in touch. #DeepGeothermal #HeatNetworks

As countries step up their climate ambitions, clean energy technologies are set to become the fastest-growing segment of demand for most minerals, including copper. Copper is a key enabling commodity to support the energy transition, including its use in the transmission of energy from sources of supply to locations of demand and plays a critical input across a range of renewable energy generation systems from wind turbines to solar photovoltaics. That’s why we’ve worked with the resources sector, the NSW Government, universities and the mining technology industry to provide a clear roadmap for collaboration and innovation. Find out more about the rise in copper demand and what we can do about it in our Roadmap to Zero - Mineral Processing report. https://lnkd.in/efshX5mc #RoadmapToZero #MineralProcessing #Copper #CleanEnergyFuture #RenewableEnergy

#AlphaESS C&I Case Study in Inner Mongolia, China 💡 Spanning two mining sites in Ordos City, #InnerMongolia, this AlphaESS 1.5MW/3MWh distributed energy storage project operates on a 100% 'self-consumption' model. Projections indicate an annual energy storage and discharge capacity of 1.8 million kWh, significantly reducing the mines' dependence on traditional energy sources to provide stable power for the workers. This achievement earned the project the Excellent Project Award in the Behind-the-Meter category at the 8th International Energy Storage Innovation Competition. Our energy storage system enables real-time monitoring of PV power supply and reverse power flow at grid gateway meters. This enables prompt adjustment of operational strategies, ensuring that power generated by the mines' PV system is utilized exclusively for their own needs. Additionally, AlphaESS's energy storage system features individual cabinet isolation capability. During operation, even if a unit malfunctions, the system will automatically disconnect that unit, ensuring the normal operation of other outdoor cabinets. This provides a strong guarantee for the stable operation and continuous power supply of the entire system. ✨ #InnerMongolia #PV #GreenEnergy #EnergyStorage #RenewableEnergy #SmartEnergy #SolarPower

"Installations of solar panels exceeded expectations in 2023. Initial estimates of 413 Gigawatts (GW) for global photovoltaic additions have been revised higher to about 443 GW (source: BNEF). The huge rollout of new installations propelled #solar #silver demand to 190 million ounces (moz) last year (source: The Silver Institute). This year, growth should largely continue, possibly taking solar demand over 200 moz."(heraeus.com).Our Zancudo Project, boasting high-grade silver reserves, presents a compelling #investment #opportunity for those seeking to #capitalize on emerging trends. Scheduled to commence production by mid-2024, our updated geological model indicates an estimated silver grade of 107 grams per tonne. A water-repelling cement (ThermaLock Cement) made of zeolite and calcium phosphate minerals that is made up by combining fly ash, calcium aluminate, and sodium polyphosphate. None of these ingredients are inherently hydrophobic, but this invention tells us that the behavior of a material in a mixture or under certain conditions can be influenced by other components or treatments. Hydrophobicity in cement is an important property that can prevent its degradation through carbonation, etc. I know one of our group memebrs at #PennState is also working on making a cement/ ceramic out of a mixture of fly ash and clays! #WeARE
This water-repelling cement is one of the newest materials developed by Brookhaven chemist Toshifumi Sugama. His nearly five decades' worth of contributions to the geothermal energy field were recognized by Geothermal Rising with the 2023 Outstanding Research Award. Learn more: https://bit.ly/3F41HXe
