This piece by Ken Doctor is a smart take on the future of local news in the #UnitedStates. It includes 9 hard truths news managers and policy makes should take into account when considering how to help local news organisations. "If you believe that readers and businesses needing customers need local news, then figuring out how to provide it doesn’t just serve a mission need, it powers new business. That may seem contrarian, within our current scarcity mindset, but consider a longer time horizon. If we execute correctly, we could see healthy organizations and businesses robustly serving communities, sustainably and growing for a long time to come," he writes. Always assessing a reporter's #levelofknowledge on a subject allows us to understand if the reporter has been exposed to mis- or disinformation. If we're not working from the same set of basic facts, its going to make these complex medical and scientific conversations that much harder. Something we should be working together--as comms professionals and reporters--to combat on all fronts. Thanks for sharing these insights, PRNEWS! #publicrelations

Digital Transformation Leader | Fractional CMO | Ex-Mahindra, Godrej, Reliance | Marketing Technology Evangelist
Just half (47%) of a sample of editors, CEOs, and digital leaders say they are confident about journalism’s prospects in the year ahead. More positively, a number of upmarket publishers can see now a path to sustainable growth from a combination of digital subscriptions and other revenue streams. There are also hopes that a year of major political and sporting events might boost the number of engaged users and help counter audience fragmentation and news avoidance. ‘We see many challenges from the revenue side and the political environment,’ says María Ramírez, Deputy Managing Editor at elDiario.es in Spain. ‘but at the same time, [it will] probably be a year of big audiences around the world with several key elections and the Olympic Games’. In journalism and many other fields, "local" is understood as somehow less than global, limited. But what if the reverse is true: What if the most sought-after expertise is closest to the story? In her new book "Byline," Ashoka Fellow Cristi Hegranes, founder of Global Press, looks at the future of news and the opportunity to meld local and global for greater accuracy and trust. Join us on Sept. 20 to explore this and also hear how some reporting practices from Covid times may be here to stay – and why that’s a good thing. RSVP here: https://lnkd.in/gzSmiFVY
