Exciting news in the world of footwear and apparel technology! One of the most interesting technologies to roll out is the use of RFID to allow for individual item scanning within a container. This not only saves time, but also ensures 100% accuracy without having to manually count hundreds of items. My company already implemented this technology years ago for QA checks on ocean container boxes and it's amazing to see it now being used for individual cartons of shoes or garments. Products that provide quick stock turns are a retailer’s dream. Combine that with the ability to replenish quickly, and you have retail nirvana. But this blessing can also be a curse. Go to any store with displays of basic underwear, stockings and socks, and what do you see? Gaps and holes—missing colors and sizes. This is called frozen stock. How does this happen. Stock is automatically replenished when the stock system tells merchandisers that the stock has reached a low point. But if the stock system is inaccurate and stock is overstated, then the trigger to replenish may never be reached. The solution – with RFID technology, the ability to cycle count on a regular basis, and the high stock accuracy RFID provides, the frozen stock problem is solved. UNIQLO easily has the best self-checkout system 🛍️ It’s an open bin that automatically tallies clothing items based on RFID tech. The Japanese firm — with annual sales of ~$19B — started the transition in 2014 but rolled it out widely in recent years. Why? The price of RFID chips has fallen to $0.04 per piece (from $0.60 a decade ago), which allowed the fast fashion giant to embed it into billions of clothing items. Per The Wall Street Journal, there are 4 types of tags (“hanging tags, waist tags, sticker tags for packaged goods and header tags for those socks”). Uniqlo actually started investing in RFID chips and hardware to better track inventory and supply chain movements. Now, 70-90% of in-store purchases are self-checkout by RFID.
