AI and Military Vehicle Autonomy Demonstrated by AUKUS DIN The collaborative partnership between Australia, the UK and the US has been demonstrated and displayed by AUKUS, with the first application of autonomy and Artificial Intelligence sensing systems in a real-time military environment. The demonstration involved the deployment of AI enabled UAVs against land targets that were disabled and destroyed. Partners and experts from the Defence Science and Technology Laboratory (Dstl), used AI to enhance the identification, and speed of identification of enemy targets, as well as make adjustments that would reduce risk to allied life and assets. In practice, we witnessed several drones, from each respective nation, operating collaboratively in the same airspace to achieve a shared objective. In a statement, Commodore Rachel Singleton, head of the Defence Artificial Intelligence Centre (DAIC), and UK lead for AUKUS AI and Autonomy Working Group, said: “Resilient and Autonomous Artificial Intelligence Technologies [RAAIT] provides the opportunity to develop, test and trial AI models on autonomous systems. “The AUKUS partnership is key to ensuring that the systems designed by each nation are interoperable into the future. Service personnel from one nation will be supported by capabilities that have been developed across all three nations.” With the partnership enhancing speed of development, we are witnessing new capacities being tested to protect different military assets and platforms, including protection of armoured vehicles from electronic warfare, laser and GPS attacks.

This new, advanced Beyond Line of Sight (BLOS) controlling capability will be unveiled during #Eurosatory2024, which will take place in Paris, France, from June 17 to 21. What are autonomous weapons systems? Slaughterbots, also called “autonomous weapons systems” or “killer robots”, are weapons systems that use artificial intelligence (AI) to identify, select, and kill human targets without human intervention. Whereas in the case of unmanned military drones the decision to take a life is made remotely by a human operator, with autonomous weapons the decision is made by algorithms alone. An autonomous weapon system is pre-programmed to kill a specific “target profile.” The weapon is then deployed into an environment where its AI searches for that “target profile” using sensor data, such as facial recognition. When the weapon encounters someone or something the algorithm perceives to match its target profile, it fires and kills.
