Student voice is a foundational and often missing element in school crisis recovery & renewal work. As school leaders, it is imperative to listen and learn from and with young people to gain a deeper understanding of how adults and systems can create the cultures and conditions that center recovery & renewal. The work doesn’t just stop at the response: Holding listening sessions with students who experienced crisis or harm years after, or tapping into the wisdom of your alumni is a great way to hold a brave space to identify what is working and conversely what is not. We are excited to announce our collaboration with San Antonio Independent School District (SAISD)! Crocus is supporting San Antonio ISD in building an innovative tool required to realize their vision of attracting, developing, and retaining exceptional educators. The tool is being developed using Crocus’ EducatorView™ dashboard framework and is designed to address five critical areas that align with SAISD's goals: 1. Analyze and anticipate vacancies at the school level to understand and get ahead of changes. 2. Assess school level health in order to equitably distribute resources. 3. Provide district leaders with evaluations of particular strategies around campus improvement plans. 4. Bring to the forefront professional development opportunities and their impact on the district. 5. Understand and track career goals of staff within the district to better coach staff. A $2.5M grant from the Howard Hughes Medical Institute will launch multiple initiatives to create a more inclusive and welcoming environment for all students. “Knowledge comes from many different sources, so if we want to be true to our label as a university that promotes learning and creates knowledge, then we have to better use the resources that are out there, and those resources are across all spectrums of humanity.” - Breazzano Family Green and Gold Biology Professor Jim Vigoreaux UVM will develop and implement four programs: 1. Provide Professional development opportunities to staff and faculty, who can implement changes to create more welcoming classroom environments. 2. Identify and remove institutional policies that create roadblocks for students. 3. Offer programming for all students “to help them all develop cultural competency, cultural humility and intergroup dialogue skills – the skills they need to be a more inclusive social culture.” 4. Creation of “Our Common Ground Leadership Development Program,” half of whose students will come from groups historically underrepresented in STEM fields.
