In today's #EmployeeSpotlight we are sharing the story of Chris Hodge, one of our Training Business Partners. Chris joined Gregory Group just over seven years ago after a career in the Royal Navy as a weapons and drill instructor. In his own words, Chris tells us about his role and his transition from the military. Q1: What does your job entail? I train drivers to help them achieve their Driver Certificate of Professional Competence (DCPC). I also deliver safety training and am on hand to support our Transport Managers with any training requirements. But when I first joined Gregory Group, I was a trainee working to secure my Class 2 licence. I then passed my Class 1 test and became a pallet network driver. Q2: What do you enjoy most about working at Gregory Group? My career progression has been very rewarding. As a driver, I was the person people came to for advice and from that, I was able to explore a career in training. From a day-to-day point of view, the best bit of my job is the two-way interaction. Seeing someone engage with what I am teaching and then applying it in practice is very satisfying. Q3: How did you find the transition from the Navy to Gregory Group? It was quite an easy transition. I felt welcomed on the first day and the camaraderie created the sense of a 'military environment'. Everyone was friendly and offered help, which has been echoed across the business. When I was due to leave the military, it felt daunting, but it has been a brilliant opportunity to learn and develop my career. But that said, I will never forget where I came from, and I still apply the values and ethos I learnt while serving. #OurPeople #DeliveringWinners #transportation #logistics #warehousing

After 14 years as a Transport Operations Manager at our Shepton Mallet depot, we recently bid Colin Feather farewell as he begins his new chapter of retirement. Colin has managed our pallet network since 2010 so before he went, we asked him what he enjoyed about his role and what advice he would give to others following in his footsteps. What have you enjoyed most about your role? Every day is the same but very different. We have deliveries to make but different challenges with those deliveries. I've never been a clock watcher and the time always flew by. I met some great people along the way that I will stay in touch with long after departing the business. It's been a real pleasure to work with people who want to succeed. What advice would you give to others coming into a similar role? 1) Try to operate the business as if it were your own. 2) Don't be overwhelmed by the enormity of the role. Volumes can fluctuate hugely but there is no magic wand. As long as everyone does all they can, they can do no more. 3) Trust the team and ensure the team can trust you. What do you plan to do with your retirement? Enjoy the free time to do all week what I previously tried to cram into weekends! That is going to include spending time with my family and grandchildren, going for long walks with my sprolly dog Bramble, enjoying our narrow boat, and our lovely, but challenging garden! Thank you to Colin for all you have done for us. We all wish you a happy retirement. #EmployeeSpotlight #DeliveringWinners

For today's #ThrowbackThursday we are taking you back to 1968 when this Atkinson named "Avenger" was photographed on the Royal Border Bridge at Berwick-upon-Tweed. Having recently been repainted, "Avenger" was running the east coast night trunk at 9:30pm on a sunny June evening. #TT #OurHeritage #VintageFleet #VintageTrucks #DeliveringWinners

Have you ever thought about how your loaf of bread reaches the shop shelves? After being baked and packaged it needs to get to the shop. That's where we come in! Every day we receive an average of 140,000 freshly baked products into our warehouse, all of which need to be sorted into customer orders. That's 450 customers which could all want any number of 410 different products. This has to be done in a few hours before the delivery team arrive to load the orders into the lorries. The answer to doing this effectively is an LED light system which hangs from steel ropes. The LED lights hang on a row with each light representing one customer order. The lights are linked to a customer order system and by scanning in a product, all customer orders that require that product will light up with the required quantity. Our team then place the relevant products into that customer order space. It means the team can sort and distribute 980,000 products every week with ease. #FridayFact #FF #logistics #distribution #warehousing #KeepingTheUKFed #DeliveringWinners

For the Coulthard family, vehicles are in their blood. They not only made a business from them, they also enjoyed sport and social events that revolve around motor vehicles. Jimmy Coulthard was the first to discover the love of motorsport with records showing he was involved from the age of 17. Here he is pictured in 1951 about to set off for the Tulip Rally which started in Clermont, France, travelled 3,400km and finished in Noordwick, Holland. Geordie Halliday, John McMinn, and WJ 'Jackie' Gulline drove the 1950 Austin A70 saloon that carried the Portsmouth registration mark FBK 95 and Jimmy Coulthard, Hugh Galt, and James Montgomerie crewed the 1949 Austine Sheerline registered OS 7403. The rally took five days, driving day and night, and competitors had to endure the worst Winter weather seen for over 100 years. #OurHeritage #VintageRallies #ClassicCars #VintageMotorsport #DeliveringWinners

Did you get the final #WhereIsGregoryBear right? He was on The London Eye! 💡 Did you know? 💡 The London Eye is the UK's most popular paid for visitor attraction with 3.75 million visitors every year. The logistics of getting that many people through the attraction is something we can sympathise with! At one of our Bristol warehouses we distribute over 12 million cases every year. That's nearly 33,000 cases every day! #GregoryBear #competition #DeliveringWinners
