So. Nick Skelly spoke today about this being his 11th(!!!) year at QED Legal LLP. And I thought I'd use that as a springboard to express what I feel this place is and can be. Toby Williamson made a conscious choice 12 years ago. Choice 1: Build an agency with the same old, tired commission structure. Where even your best consultants could only hope to take about £60k home in a great year. Pack it with as many consultants as he could and take it from there. Choice 2: Build an agency that rewards proper success. Where billing target lets you earn well beyond the national average and billing huge can take you past six figures in earnings. Hire strategically. Train well. Change lives. And he chose the latter. And it changed my life. And I think Nick would testify that it's done the same for him. And now, we get to carry that forward. And help the next generation of QED consultants change their lives in a hundred different ways. Some have already started to do that. It's incredibly exciting to watch happen. Counteroffers – Part 3 (True Story) 1️⃣ February 1st, 2022 – The following counteroffer took place… …I was moments away from finalizing a major deal for a new Chief Financial Officer for a manufacturing customer of mine… After presenting the offer to my candidate, the following conversation took place… Candidate: Don’t worry, Troy. The only way I don’t take this offer is if they throw “stupid money” at me (Stupid Money = an exorbitant amount of money that you’d be stupid to walk away from). Me: Okay, let me know how it goes (an hour or so later) Candidate: So, I just had that conversation with the owner of the company and they offered me stupid money…………I think I’m going to stay where I’m at. I’m sorry, Troy. 2️⃣ May 10th, 2024 – This is precisely why you should never accept a counteroffer from your current employer! It’s been over 2 years since this candidate took the counteroffer from his company. I decided to call him today… It’s not good news! Shortly after accepting the counter, he was approached by senior management and told that they were hiring another CFO and that his role would become redundant. He was given time to find another position while they transitioned this new CFO into the company. He was paid during that time, but not given a severance. “…I should’ve listened to you, Troy…” For those wondering whether I said, “I told you so!” I held my peace. This was not an “I told you so” moment – it never is… It was a lighthearted conversation, and it was great to catch up with him… I could tell that it was a learning experience for him, and reaffirmed to me that counteroffers may seem attractive in the moment, but you’ll face the consequences of your decision at some point… The candidate remains a top prospect in my mind, and I hope to work with him again!

A do more with less negotiation tactic. It may not work for everyone. After your company lays off a bunch of employees and then asks you to be a team player to accept more responsibility, simply request a 15% raise. After a RIF, they actually could afford to pay you a little more. When they say no, simply say, great, I want a title change to "Senior" of your current role. Here's what you may want to consider. 1. They won't lay you off immediately because it's a separate legal issue from a RIF, they have less protection. 2. Yeah, you may be part of the next RIF, but you may already be a part of that RIF anyway. 3. If they don't give you the title request, well, you already know what to do.

A new year means a new opportunity to achieve our goals. But first you have to know what that is... We used the end of 2023 wisely to set up goals for 2024 and the team knows what direction to head in, but it's not just about the whole business.
