🌍✨ Today, the EU countries voted in favor of the Nature Restoration Law. It was a close call, with Austria's crucial leap in injury time sealing the deal. With the current political stance in the Netherlands and across Europe, where nature restoration isn't always a priority, I believe we should be incredibly grateful for this outcome. Behind the scenes, countless NGOs and responsible businesses have fought tirelessly for this result. I've witnessed firsthand the dedication of organizations like Patagonia, Doggerland Foundation, BLOOM Association, BirdLife International, and many others. These organizations are working relentlessly to secure a future for us, our children, and grandchildren. Truly, they give everything. We can all support them with small actions. It's important. One very impactful thing you can do, is amplifying their voice. Sign petitions, share their messages, and spread the word. Simple, but effective. This case, led by the Amar Madre Tierra Foundation, challenges mining operations impacting Colombia's most threatened ecosystem and its wildlife.🏞️ The "Rights of Nature" movement is gaining momentum, with ecosystems and species being recognised for their inherent right to life, health, and integrity. This lawsuit concerns legal recognition and emphasises the connection between human wellbeing and a healthy environment rooted in Indigenous knowledge and values. 🌍 Why it Matters: Biodiversity: Jaguars and macaws are umbrella species whose protection benefits entire ecosystems. 🐆🦜 Cultural Significance: Indigenous communities rely on these ecosystems for cultural and spiritual wealth. 🇨🇴 Environmental Justice: The lawsuit calls for enforcing existing conservation laws and properly consulting Indigenous communities. ⚖️ Despite previous court rulings favouring nature's rights, enforcement has lagged, highlighting the need for more robust protection and genuine community involvement. The Nature Conservancy, other environmental and community-based organizations are working to empower the communities most often impacted by climate change to fund and implement solutions on their terms. Since 2019, a core team of conservation, environmental justice and community advocacy organizations—convened by TNC—has come together with the goal of securing additional funding for addressing the causes and impacts of climate change, with an intentional focus on underserved people of color and low-income people previously underserved by funding programs. Supporting Indigenous peoples is crucial to protect the world’s rainforests and the climate. So why does the broader conservation discourse continue to overlook this? In an op-ed featured on Mongabay, the Executive Directors of Rainforest Foundation Norway - Tørris Jæger, Rainforest Foundation US - Suzanne Pelletier and Rainforest Foundation UK - Joe Eisen emphasize the essential role of Indigenous peoples in addressing the climate crisis. They urge governments and donors to not only acknowledge this vital role but also to provide financial support. Because the science is clear: Forests managed by Indigenous peoples sequester more carbon and are more resilient. Yet the international community consistently fails to include Indigenous peoples in funding and policy decisions that significantly impact them. Our report #FallingShort found that between 2011-2020, less than 1% of the total climate aid provided by international donors reached Indigenous peoples’ forest conservation efforts. Even though donors have since committed to increase this funding, we're still a long way before the funding is reaching the ground and it is remotely proportionate in size to the efforts carried out by Indigenous groups to preserve forests. Governments and donors must increase direct, flexible, and less bureaucratic support for Indigenous communities.
