FREE Alliance Connect: Shropshire Wildlife Trust - is it a risk? Monday 5 February, 6.30pm – 7.30pm Fear is a healthy and ultimately essential part of human life. Not only is it what helps us to learn what is harmful to us and those around us, but it can preserve life and can ensure the continued progression of humanity.  However, in a world when we are continually surrounded by inaccurate perceptions of how harmful and how likely a risk is, we have become increasingly risk averse. So how does the language we use, and our own subconscious physical and mental response to risk, affect what and how children learn? In this engaging session led by Ellie Leach, senior education officer and safeguarding lead at Shropshire Wildlife Trust, we ask ‘What is risk?’, delve into our own feelings about risk and explore whether our perceptions based in fact or feeling and what that means for early childhood development?  With a focus on the language of risk and how what we say helps or hinders active play and development, we will use practical examples and evidence to support you to make choices that enrich your learning environment and help children to use their in-built expertise to fulfil their potential. Every survey counts! The big garden bird watch. Are you getting involved? A 4 year old child with a containing scheme loved it! Bruner (1966, cited in Montessori, 1976:81) writes “The best way to create interest in a subject is to render it worth knowing, which means to make the knowledge gained usable in one’s thinking beyond the situation in which the learning occurred”. Children’s operational scheme applications open up opportunities to support interesting and meaningful learning for every child. For example, a child who loved containing and filling bottles with water and talking about ‘full’ and ’empty’ (exploring capacity) really enjoyed finding out about the needs of wild birds and monitoring the bird food taken each day from the bird feeder (linking to his enquiry of full and empty) – a feeder that he took personal responsibility for replenishing. The containing operational scheme anchored his emerging knowledge of wildlife and promoted counting for a purpose (both capacity and types of birds), as well as finding out about the value of tallying! Come and find out about schemes, such as transporting, rotating, trajectory, connecting and how knowledge of SchemaPlay can have a significant impact to children’s mastery behaviour and outcomes in your setting. Large employers' calls for flexing the apprenticeship levy would hurt small employers argues Gillian Keegan in the Times today. With 98% of the apprenticeship programme budget spent in the last two years, she is correct that any new flexibility would limit opportunities for SMEs. But no mention of the small matter of half a billion of unallocated levy funds though.
