Physician -Scientist Studying and Developing Pharmacological and Non-Pharmacological Treatments for Psychiatric, Neurologic, Immunologic, Rare Disorders, Artist, Ballerina, Art Therapist, Positive Psychiatry Enthusiast
Now the #jobsearch process is getting increasingly complicated with many job applications, multiple rounds of #jobinterviews (recently usually three), and abundant job search advice. I would like to share my modest experience of how I obtained my first #postdoc in clinical and molecular #immunology (to study the expression of human #immunoglobulin heavy chain variable region genes) at the Karolinska Institute in Sweden. It was a lot simpler than advised by current job search experts. I listened to the advice of my Dad who is a scientist and my heart, applied for only one job, and obtained it. I was virtually an unknown scientist with unknown recommendations from Bulgaria. Hopefully, this advice may be helpful for other people searching for a job. I have to listen to it as well, because when I deviate from my principles, I am not as successful! Mainly: 1) Apply only for jobs that you really love and write a genuine cover letter expressing your interest in the job to make a real connection with the hiring manager. In this respect, I have a hard time accepting the help of artificial intelligence (AI) in writing of a job application cover letter. How can AI know your individuality and why you would be a good fit for the job? 2) at job interviews listen and learn a lot more than you speak. After speaking with members of the lab I visited I was so shy and stressed that I told the professor interviewing me: "I can't say much but can assure you I will do a good job" 3) listen to your heart 4) visualize 5) get enough nourishment, rest, and sleep to keep your mind and body strong to withstand stress. If you listen to my video you will find out that a dream I had helped me to get my job! In conclusion, this is not in my video, while waiting for the fellowship in Sweden, I applied for an NIH Visiting Scientist Fogarty Fellowship from Bulgaria with a grant I wrote on anti-tumor monoclonal antibodies, to carry out research at the Wistar Institute in Philadelphia, PA. I found out I was awarded this fellowship while already a scientist in Sweden as fellowship award decisions take a long time. So, in the end, everything worked out great and I did research in Sweden, followed by the US. Here is my Fogarty Grant Award in NIH RePorter, 1992 (I am the PI!): https://lnkd.in/eSjxhVB5 #jobsearch #psotdoc #immunology #heart #dreams #motivation #science

Who has won the most Nobel Prizes? If receiving a Nobel Prize is the highest recognition for a scientist, being awarded twice by the Swedish Academy of Sciences is an extraordinary fact that, so far, only four people can boast: Frederick Sanger, Linus Pauling, John Bardeen and Marie Curie. Plus… In addition to the four double-awarded scientists, there are two institutions that have received several awards from the Swedish Academy. The first is the Red Cross, an international humanitarian institution that has so far won three Nobel Peace Prizes. One less has UNHCR, the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees. And speaking of records in relation to these awards, we must remember that the Curies are not only famous for Marie's double award. The first and second generation of this family accumulate no less than four Nobel prizes in science (her first daughter Irène Joliot-Curiewon the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1935 for the discovery of artificial radioactivity, also together with her husband) .
