LaRSSA Web Chat: Phytoremediation: Using Vegetation for Pollution Control The main theme is using vegetation for pollution control. Specific plants accumulate certain pollutants. Enhancing species combinations and growing conditions can improve hyper-accumulation of pollutants like metals from soil and water. Trees have been used on gold tailings facilities to accumulate metals like manganese, copper and zinc. Specific metallophytes have been used to hyperaccumulate nickel from soil around smelters. The trees can be used in combination with hydrophytes to remove nitrogen compounds. Examples of phytoremediation will be discussed.
