A software engineer and a software architect met in a café. The software engineer says, "My job is harder." The software architect laughs and asks, "Oh, why's that?" The software engineer replies, "Because I get lost in the code I write." The software architect responds, "You think that's simple? When I'm planning a project, I forget which floor I'm on! #softwareengineering #softwaredevelopment #softwarearchitect

Hiring a bunch of developers does not guarantee you a great product... It guarantees you a bunch of code. A great product comes from these things: ⚡ Product vision ⚡ Customer feedback ⚡ Smart architecture decisions ⚡ Good technical leadership It takes all the things.

The mark of a seasoned senior developer or engineer comes down to their knack for organization and stepping into the stakeholder's shoes. On the flip side, as developers, our job is to defend the stake—be it the software, code, or architecture—with an eye for quality. Sure, getting things out the door is priority number one. But it's all about how we get it done. Otherwise, anyone might be able to deliver!! #softwarequality #softwarearchitecture #codequality

Tech Principal AND Aspiring Chessmaster @ AND Digital (Ex Booking.com | BBC Sport & Childrens | The Hut Group)
When you look for a new Software Engineer role do you look for “greenfield projects” in the job specification? Some of the times where I made the greatest leaps in my programming career was when looking after really complex (sometimes subtle genius) messy codebases. Refactoring “God Controllers” (my term for controllers that have everything stuffed into them) and unpicking giant tarballs of mess is not just satisfying when you’re done, it’s also going to mean that you can have a better understanding of less complex codebases faster. So when someone asks you to go work on a legacy (crustacean) codebase (ok ok so most code is technically legacy after it’s released after beta I suppose) see it as an opportunity to really level up your technical skills. Because when you come back to writing those Greenfield microservice/serverless applications. It’ll be a lot easier to understand than the monolithic giant ball of mess you previously looked after. #legacycode #softwareengineering #microservices #monoliths #refactoring #monoliths

There's a small 🤏 yet significant difference between a mid-level and senior engineer. Mid-level engineers work with "code". Senior engineers work with "code" "environment around the code". They care about infrastructure, domain and system as a whole, and work on improving it. 1️⃣ at a time. #senior #softwareengineer #environment #domain #improvement

A few more great point from his talk at #platengday “do compliance at the point of change” and “decouple the work of compliance with verifying the evidence of compliance” 👌
OH from Bryan Oliver at #kubecon Platform Engineering Day: "platform engineering is an exercise in software development not operations" heck yes!
