Know what can sink you? Overreach: trying too hard. We can double-down and end up overstating, which leads to inaccuracy on our part and to caution and guardedness by those who hear what we are saying. Or we over-strive: then people wonder what our problem is and step away. We all have enough problems of our own. There's old fly-fishing wisdom about "putting the fish down." The angler fishes the pool hard -- too much casting, too much agitation in the cast: makes for an unnatural presentation and when the trout detect that something unnatural and forceful keeps happening, they all bolt for the deepest spot in the pool. And there they wait until things return to their natural state. What gets things back to their natural state? -- Be aware of what you are doing -- Stop -- Sit and exhale -- When you are calm again, look around --note what is happening --tailor your actions so that they fit the flow of what is happening Then the changes you propose to your customer, your supervisors, your team, your teammates make sense to them and they'll take the fly. And then, once you've set the hook, you reel in by looking at the fish and seeing how it responds. You still need tactics that respect the fish in order to land the fish. And you still need tactics that respect others in order to win the right to their business, the right to their consent. https://lnkd.in/eX8M8NAg
