When I started watching a roundtable discussion from the early writers of The Simpsons, I wasn’t expecting a really great lesson in company culture. The discussion included Conan O'Brien, who also worked as a writer on SNL. He talked about the difference between the two writers rooms: The SNL writer’s room was competitive. There were limited opportunities to get your work showcased, so everyone was looking out for themselves. The Simpsons writer’s room was collaborative. Everyone was working together to put out the highest quality episode. If someone else came up with a good joke, everyone was excited because the episode was better. At a startup, everyone should be working together to put out the highest quality product. People shouldn’t feel like they need to push their ideas forward because it might be the only chance they have to shine. Instead, employees should be encouraged to work together to answer the question: how do we build the best product? Link to the video in the comments - there are a few other good lessons in there!

How do you measure authenticity? Pretty tough, but you know it when you see it. That's why it was so fun having 💥 Katie Martell on the #cheatcode this week. Interesting conversation about maybe over-indexing on authenticity... we've all either heard or said, "That's just who I am or how I've always done it." People and brands reserve the right to change, evolve and adapt. If you don't are you really growing? We take a deep dive into all sorts of topics surrounding authenticity, including how it impacts culture in a start-up. The advantage start-ups have is the ability to be nimble. Today's talent market is highly competitive, employees expect more of their employer. A huge opportunity for early stage founders to use their authentic self to bring forward the mission and values of their company. Allowing them to attract those that align with them codifying the foundation of the organization. Highly entertaining episode as Katie brings her authentic self from bell to bell. Culture isn't being nice to people. Okay, let's be clear at the onset - we all want to be kind, and we all appreciate when others are kind to us. Don't get us wrong, occasional celebrations and team treats are great. But is that where your company culture truly lies? In this week's episode, I had the pleasure of sitting down with Scott Greenberg, the dynamic author of "Stop the Shift Show." Scott emphasizes that Culture takes more than just that. Building a SaaS is like solving a Rubik's cube. Every piece you move affects the others, and if you keep at it, at some point, each face of the cube starts clicking into place. Once you have a product being used by a few people, the next challenge is retention. There's nothing more satisfying than knowing you can double down on acquisition efforts because once people convert, they're likely to stay with you for a long time. That's the real game. Thanks, Andrew Michael, for having me on @ChurnFM ✊ #retention #saas #buildingproducts #churn
I loved recording this week's episode of CHURN FM with Sofia Quintero as I learned a lot from our shared experiences from different vantage points. When we first booked the recording we spent the first 45 mins trading war stories and we had to reschedule to record this episode. Sofia originally built EnjoyHQ (now part of UserTesting) and grew the business until later being acquired by UserTesting. At some point in my previous startup journey, we accidentally ended up becoming a competitor of EnjoyHQ. I touched on why it was a mistake in the episode and in short and ironically it came down to the fact that user feedback should never be followed blindly. It was super interesting to hear her approach iterating towards product market fit and how her process is evolving now with hindsight as she is building Collie. I'd highly recommend giving this one a listen. Links are in the comments. Thanks again for joining Sofia!
