Nice to see our efforts to reduce plastic packaging recognized together with veritable titans in the industry like Nike. This is in a category where diapers are made from 30 grams of plastic each, packaged in plastic bags and sold as "sustainable" with other assorted claims like Rolls Royce of diapers (not sure what that means...big, boxy and expensive?) or Plant-based with sub 10% plant content (remind me to declare myself vegan next time I have a potato with my steak). So by the time the baby is out of diapers, parents will place up to 10,000 plastic bottles-worth of plastic into landfills while being told they're pampering and hugging their child with mainstream or celebrity-endorsed diapers that all call themselves luxury, premium and more. We have always strived for transparency and continued improvements. Our diapers are USDA Certified as 55% BioBased, compostable with our REDYPER service and now packaged in fully recyclable paper packaging. Perfect...far from it? Better, you bet.

Hi all! Here's something unexpected and surprising: I'm going to promote stuff we've been up to at Finnish Design Shop. All jokes aside, this stuff is good. We're taking part in HDW by throwing together a launch event for something that we've been cooking for the past two years: the Product Sustainability Framework. "What the heck is that?" I hear you asking. To keep the answer short, the Product Sustainability Framework is a comprehensive tool designed to evaluate the sustainability of every product available in our online store. From a toothbrush to a sofa. So, to be clear, with the soon-to-be-launched tool, every single product available online through Finnish Design Shop will receive a sustainability rating based on various aspects of responsibility, ranging from environmental and climate impacts to circular economy practices and social responsibility. We feel this tool is of great use not only for the conscious consumer, but also especially for the professionals working in the design industry and for anyone working with something like, say, procurement. And, as far as selling new stuff in a world drowning in old stuff goes, this is something that will definitely help me personally feel a bit better knowing that we're taking a real initiative and walking the talk for sustainability. 📚 Book Review 📚 "Cradle to Cradle" by Braungart and McDonough presents a framework for environmentally sustainable product design across the full lifecycle. Introducing biological and technical material cycles, the book considers reuse from the initial design stage. Supplemented by case studies like Herman Miller, it provides inspiration for sustainable services too. Key lessons emerge on holistic lifecycle thinking, effective material selection, and circular production and consumption models. Though partly technical, the core concepts are accessible to all backgrounds. For any designer interested in sustainability, this book is essential reading. Yesterday, our FLEX/design team visited the eye-opening 'Food for Thought' exhibition at the Het Scheepvaartmuseum in Amsterdam. We immersed ourselves into the world of global food production 🌱, showcased by Kadir Van Lohuizen and we gained valuable insights into the Dutch role in this ecosystem. In this exploration, we collected several compelling directions for creating impactful design: 💡 Minimizing Climate Impact: Engaging in thoughtful discourse on strategies to minimize the climate impact of our food system, exploring sustainable practices and innovations. How can we design less impactful logistic solutions and packagings that are both super convenient and fully re-usable. And how can we encourage consumers to chose for local alternatives by providing the right information on the packaging, shelves and overall customer journey in retail? 💡 Maximizing Social Impact: Exploring ways to extend the positive effects of our design beyond borders, ensuring fair wages for those involved in food production globally and encouraging sustainable consumption practices. 1/3rd of all our food is thrown away (wow!). How can we encourage our clients and consumers to be more aware and feel responsible about this? and; How can we design (dispense) solutions that let you only buy and consume what you need? 💡 Design Reflection: Provoking introspection among our team — should we, as designers, reconsider certain creations to align with a more sustainable and ethical approach? What a great way to end the week! We are thrilled to announce that three of our prototype designs from the 'Once Upon A Time' portfolio have been nominated at this year's prestigious Pentawards! Amongst over 2,000 entries worldwide, our prototypes—HUFF AND PUFF, MIRROR MIRROR, and TWELVE O'CLOCK—are part of the less than 700 designs that made the cut. Our innovative collaboration with Supperstudio, KURZ, ESTAL, Etiquel, Amorim, Etinsa, and Egisa has reshaped classic fairytales into modern-day sustainable packaging narratives. Let's take a closer look at the nominated designs: HUFF AND PUFF—utilizing our Fasson® Velvet Violet and Fasson® Velvet Black papers, this concept reimagines 'The Three Little Pigs' in a bid to challenge prejudices, advocating for a world where everyone lives by their own rules, free of judgment. MIRROR MIRROR—using the Fasson® Pet 100 Bright Top paper, this prototype revisits 'Snow White' to question aesthetic norms and promote inner beauty, kindness, empathy, sincerity, and love. And finally, TWELVE O'CLOCK—featuring our Embelex labeling solutions, this design presents a fresh take on 'Cinderella,' promoting empowerment and the freedom to take charge of our own destinies.
