There is a lot of scaremongering and flurry flying round the corridors of LinkedIn about generative AI (Chat GPT etc.) and cheating/advantage in assessment that is making me feel a bit matronly about the need to get some balanced messaging out about types of assessment, role of assessment and conduct in examination protocols.
Cheating in exams is as old as the examination system itself and there are clear processes and protocols, such as invigilation or proctoring, to ensure this doesn´t happen. In the name of fair representation, I asked Chat GPT 3.5 what it thought about invigilation and proctoring, and it came up with a pretty good answer – check it out!
So, the real question is what level of rigor do you want to apply to the conduct of an assessment within your organisation? Is assessment part of a qualitative discovery process, a starting point for talent benchmarking etc. or a quantitative examination?
If assessment is a qualitative discovery process that helps you explore and model consensus about the look and shape of talent and team effectiveness within your organisation, then the use of generative AI by your candidates or workforce is nothing more than an augmented learning process to prepare them in navigating the assessment content based on what they have learnt and understand. Consider the exploration of subject matter in a classroom – are students allowed to research the content that they are being asked to understand so they understand it, digest it and then improve their performance based on this understanding? Generative AI is not completing the assessment for you, it acts as a research and learning tool (and if we understood it as such we would be banging the validity-of-the-data-it-is-run-on drum, rather than trashing it) and to some extent an access tool that supports disadvantage, especially where candidates or the workforce do not have access to a parent or colleague who can help them navigate information in the world of learning and work.
On the other hand, if assessment is quantitative (1 1 = 2) then it is glaringly obvious, and not worthy of lengthy tabloid journalism, that generative AI can give you the correct answer. In these contexts, we need to be talking about conduct of examination processes, such as invigilation or proctoring, as stronger verification methods will need to placed around your candidates and workforce when they take these types of assessment.
There is no bogeyman here, and it is certainly not generative AI. Rather, let us calmly educate ourselves about how assessment actually works and then we will understand better the value and risks that generative AI etc. poses. I cover a bunch of points in this webinar with Stephen below.

What is a must-see at #EmbeddedWorld24? 🤔
The show is huge and as an exhibitor, you have little time to browse around.
So, what is one thing that you are exhibiting or know of that should not be missed?
I’d appreciate it if you could share in the comments using the format:
‘Must-see - Company - Booth No.’
I’ll start!

"Who'd skip a German bash with 30,000 attendees?" 🎉🇩🇪
Yes, it's #dmexco2023
Just a conference you can't miss if you're in the Digital Marketing space.
Over the years, Passendo has picked up a ton of business here.
I think it's my seventh or 8th time - but who's counting.
Here's what to expect:
◾ 2 days with an insanely high-intensity level
◾ 20,000 steps per day,
◾ 30,000 people gathered in an indoor area that feels bigger than Denmark,
◾ 8-10 meetings per day (I do 20-min. chats and leave 10 min. to find my next prospect),
And the cool part is that even with all those people, it always works out – something about Germans and logistics.
Not to mention the after-event arrangements. You can't leave the event without enjoying some free Booth Parties. You might even be able to check into your hotel for 20 minutes before heading to some local Sweine and Kölch.
And let's not forget the yearly hype around the "famous" OMClub party that nobody can ever get a ticket to - but everybody still seems to be there 😅.
DMEXCO is still the biggest party in the industry, and as long as it remains that way, you'll see me there. 😎
See you tomorrow!
