Two digital health startups publish studies showing their efficacy A new study from Calibrate showed more sustained weight loss than clinical trial treatment with leading GLP-1 meds like Wegovy and Ozempic. Calibrate’s program combines medication with behavior change to improve overall metabolic health and sustain long-term weight loss results. The study found that members sustained a 16.2% average weight loss at 12 months and 17.9% average weight loss at 24 months. Elsewhere, a proprietary cognitive assessment from Linus Health, which is focused on enabling early detection of Alzheimer's and other dementias, was found to outperform the most commonly used paper-based assessment in detecting early mild cognitive impairment and dementia and with less ethnic and racial bias. Additionally, patients can complete the test on an iPad in three minutes versus a 10-20 minute paper test administered by trained personnel. With so many clinically-focused digital health companies not having any clinical trials or regulatory filings, it’s nice to see Calibrate and Linus demonstrating that their solutions work.

👋 Giving patients sustainable access to software-based medicine, otherwise known as digital therapeutics, requires four basic things: 1. Make certain the product can deliver clinically-proven outcomes to a patient who is satisfied with the user experience, resulting in real-world cost-savings to their health plans. ✅ 2. Make certain the product has a service/ops team behind it, and the product itself is designed for delivery and engagement within existing provider workflows. No technical/administrative lift or shift. Reduce the leap that providers need to make. ✅ 3. Create flexible methods for health plans and other stakeholders to cover the product, and services around the product. ✅ 4. Provide ready-made access to data supporting that 1 and 2 are happening as planned. ✅ Plans are trying to figure this stuff out too. You can absolutely work on the same side of the table as them if your product meets 1 and 2, you're willing to work with them on 3, and 4 is a formality. While coverage standardization would provide an extraordinary boost to innovation, we just aren't there yet. Hell, we aren't even close to there with provider reimbursement, or drug costs, or the rest of the tangled web. Everyone is [hopefully] trying to figure this stuff out in real time. I learned so much at this week's Femtech Innovations in Hormone Health event in San Francisco! The event brought together founders, investors and enthusiasts to discuss emerging trends in hormone health and Femtech as a whole. Main Takeaways: ⚡Lack of Attention - Hormone health receives limited attention in most medical school curriculums, which results in a lot of unknowns surrounding the impacts of hormones on women’s health. One of the best ways for patients to advocate for themselves is to ask questions. Next time you're at the doctor, ask them your hormone-related questions, and highlight your personal experience. Even if they can't answer today, patient self-advocacy is vital for driving further education to this area. 💡Solutioning - A large area of focus in the Femtech space is on using diagnostic tools and the data they produce to inform lifestyle changes and treatments. While consumers are eager to track more of their personal data than ever before, data abundance can present challenges in translating findings into practical applications. It is important to be clear on whose lives will be made easier by this data (doctor, patient, etc.), and find clear ways to communicate trends to stakeholders so they can leverage them to take action. 💰Investment - Femtech companies currently receive only 3% of all digital health investment, despite Femtech problems impacting about half of the population. Trends also indicate that Femtech startups receive greater traction with investors at the early stages, but face challenges raising later rounds. Founders can combat this by positioning their companies as broader "healthcare companies" at later stages of raising capital where they tend to garner less attention.
