A privilege to be in community with Kira O'Brien, LMSW, DSW, Emma's Torch Yesenia Mata, La Colmena NYC, Robert Agyemang, The New York Immigration Coalition, Therese Daly, New York Association for Training and Employment Professionals (NYATEP) and Gregory J Morris, MPA, NYC Employment and Training Coalition (NYCETC) yesterday moderating a panel on how to identify and accelerate concrete ideas/actions that can be taken/considered to address the existing barriers to quality jobs for new arrivals. Brilliance shared all around including: - center the new arrivals perspectives and needs in solutioning - fund the work liberally and generously - increase/improve language access services - leverage existing skills mapping resources so workforce can better align new arrival talent to available work - accelerate work authorization, including leading by developing city/state authorization - and develop a coordinated immigrant workforce development strategy for the city that engages and aligns all resources to best support this workforce and their potential (shout out to Brian Chen, Chinese-American Planning Council) and last but not least, truthful honesty that that the challenges experienced by this current influx of new comers are not new to us, in fact workforce development has responded to crisis before, at times spectacularly, at times not so much. We know what is needed, we know (for the most part) how to do it, we claim we want it. *Loved* chairing Learning and Work Institute's Employment and Skills Summit, where we convened a broad range of speakers & organisations to look at employment support. What struck me is that there’s no shortage of ideas, evidence as to what works, and a huge amount of willing across sectors to make the whole system work better for people & the economy. Making progress can be complicated & have many barriers along the way. But in a changing world it feels like we need to embrace and ride with that complexity, and keep collaborating across sectors and system, to make sure we can achieve our shared goals. It’s too important not to. There’s just so much to pick up on. 💬 A keynote address from Naomi Clayton, Deputy Director L&W covered the latest #LabourMarket analysis and, crucially, the implications for policy on #employment, #benefits & economic growth. 💬 We then did a deep dive on employment support, what’s working, who's it reaching, and where the support is just not as effective as it should be. Exciting news for Gippsland Business The Department of Employment and Workplace Relations (DEWR) have announced the Request for Proposal (RFP) for Workforce Australia Local Jobs National Priority Fund 2023-25 is now open! The National Priority Fund supports job creation strategies and addresses structural or other barriers to employment across Australia. To continue to deliver on the National Priority Fund outcomes and objectives, specific priorities have been identified for new projects up until 30 June 2025. The six priorities of the Fund are: - Supporting more First Nations people in employment, education or training in areas where Employment Regions and Community Development Program meet - Supporting young people into the labour market through paid job placements in social enterprises - Supporting mature age people to participate in the workforce and connect to jobs - Supporting communities to become more resilient develop new employment opportunities as part of the transition to Net Zero - Supporting Culturally and Linguistically Diverse (CaLD) women through tailored self-employment programs - Redesigning jobs to better align with the skills and capabilities of people seeking work The department are seeking proposals for projects ranging from $200,000 to $1 million (GST exclusive) to address these priorities. It is anticipated that projects will roll out across Australia from early 2024. Applications close on Thursday 30 November 2023 at 2:00 pm (Canberra Time). As I revisit our United Way Greater Toronto's Inclusive Employment Strategy and Theory of Change to prepare a deck for an upcoming team meeting, two emotions arise: gratitude towards my former colleague and friend Biljana Zuvela for being the lead creator of this material, and pride in being part of a team and organization with an ambitious and impactful long-term vision: The Inclusive Employment Strategy aims to connect people who experience employment barriers with training and supports that enable them to build foundations for employment, acquire in-demand skills and secure income and job security. More specifically, the strategy seeks to create opportunities for job seekers experiencing barriers to employment and employers with hiring needs to connect in mutually beneficial ways so that: • More people facing multiple barriers have better access to employment, income and job security  • Employers have access to more diverse talent pool, and they are better equipped to hire and support job seekers facing multiple barriers to employment • Neighborhoods with limited economic development capacities have more local economic opportunities • Ontario’s employment support systems are more responsive to job seekers and employers.

I have been thinking: Yesterday I was a naive inquirer in a NIAG planning meeting with Hanga-Aro-Rau Workforce Development Council. NIAG stands for National Industry Advisory Groups. These groups consist of a cross-section of people from a particular industry, advising Hanga-Aro-Rau about skills and training issues within their specific sector, with a particular focus on lifting the skill levels of the Māori workforce and other underrepresented groups. What impressed me was the care that Croydon Smith, Kieran Ormandy, Fiona McDonagh, Morgan Toki, and Astrid van Holten were discussing their upcoming NIAG meetings and wanting to ensure that they got the process right - involving the right people and preparing well so that the meeting time can be spend purely on industry highlighting their particular needs. I can see the absolute value in having the 'voice' of industry - directly impacting those priorities that Hanga-Aro-Rau focuses on in its day-to-day functioning. I am thrilled to share insights from a recent working paper titled "Enhancing Workplace Integration of Canadian Newcomers through Social Media" by Masoud Kianpour from Toronto Metropolitan University, in collaboration with the Immigrant Employment Council of BC. The working paper emphasizes the need for digital hard skills due to remote and hybrid work, highlighting the importance of proficiency in online tools and applications. Effective digital communication is crucial for newcomer integration, while the pandemic has made digital literacy essential for hiring and onboarding. Social media and online tools are vital for building support systems and social capital within organizations, aiding newcomers in adapting to workplace culture. As a working professional in the settlement sector and non profit inclusion passionate leader, I see the transformative potential of digital skills and social media in enhancing workplace integration for newcomers. These insights are crucial for employers and settlement service providers working towards a more inclusive and supportive environment for all employees.
