Yesterday’s AgriTech Nordic brought the world to Steinkjer, Norway. Miho Tanaka underscored Japan’s commitment to investing US$ 1 trillion to accelerate the Green Transformation, including in innovation throughout the agricultural supply chain. Erik Pekkeriet from Wageningen spoke about the potential for robots and sensors to unburden the 2 billion agricultural workers worldwide. New technology is doing everything from precision weedicide application and harvesting sweet peppers, through to packaging fresh produce. Andreas L Tranøy pointed to the US$ 400 billion damage in Ukraine, one of the world’s major breadbaskets. The photo of a combine harvester collecting grain in a burning field was a symbol of resilience. Ukraine is ready for investment to build back better farming systems. Johan Jörgensen asked a crucial question: what does Norway, which is even less food self-sufficient than his home country of Sweden, have to teach the world about agriculture? Panelists explained that working with strict regulations (Hans Kristian Westrum), a harsh environment (Svein Ove Langeland), and strong ethics (Marina Ettl) give Norway an edge. Svein reminded us that we lost a third of arable land over the last 40 years because of bad agricultural practices. There are only 60 harvests left before all soil degrades. Norway with its 5% arable land depends on the world for food production, but can also do its part to secure it. Nine years ago, I initiated the first Exemplar forum at Aurecon. Gathering individuals to share innovative problem-solving approaches for clients paved the way for impactful collaborations. Since then, each year we've delved into emerging topics, fostering communities of practice to meet growing client demands.
