We proudly announce our next special exhibition: 200 years of the Reederei F. Laeisz shipping company On deck 2 of the museum from March the 21st to September the 15th 2024.   It all began in Hamburg in 1824 with a business selling top hats. Within a few decades, this became one of the most important and today oldest shipping companies in the Hanseatic city of Hamburg. The House of F. Laeisz soon maintained shipping connections all over the world and was involved in the founding of other well-known shipping companies, including Hamburg Süd and Hapag-Lloyd AG. The company became well known for its Flying-P-Liners, fast sailing ships that were famous and admired until the 1930s, especially on the wheat voyage to Australia and the route around Cape Horn to the west coast of South America. Later, the shipping company entered the trade in bananas and other refrigerated cargoes. Today, F. Laeisz is fully focussed on the future. Large car ferries, bulkers and gas tankers characterise the fleet. Liquefied gas transport is becoming increasingly important, as are modern dual-fuel drives and the reduction of CO2 emissions for new generations of ships. The company is certain that the future will belong to chemicals such as green methanol and green ammonia as fuels for large ocean-going vessels. We interviewed IMO Secretary-General Kitack Lim and got his view on how he sees shipping in 10 years from now. His answer is: very much different. "Shipping is moving forward but we need a lot of technology, ship design, fuel and operations. So shipping and the port industry have to work together." On July 1st, we participated in the event "Dekarbonisierung des schweren Straßengüterverkehrs: Oberleitungstechnologie als Baustein für die Verkehrswende" held in Berlin. The event was organized by the @Ministerium für Energiewende, Klimaschutz, Umwelt und Natur (#MEKUN) and the the Ministerium für Wirtschaft, Verkehr, Arbeit, Technologie und Tourismus (#MWVATT) of Schleswig-Holstein. The event provided insights into the potential of the eHighway system to decarbonize road freight transport. Highlights included presentations on research findings, a practical report from a participating transport company, and an engaging panel discussion with key stakeholders from politics, business, and logistics. We remain optimistic that the success of the three German field trials on the eHighway system (#ELISA, #FESH, and #eWayBW) and the positive outcomes of the accompanying research will be considered in decisions on future investments in road freight transport. The Intermodal Congress IntermodalNews.pl will be held on June 12-14 in Janów Podlaski - the largest event of the intermodal industry in Poland. An excellent group of experts will take part in lectures and panel discussions, during which the challenges facing the intermodal transport industry in the near future will be discussed. Issues related to long-term decarbonization policy and modal changes in freight transport will also be discussed. Grupa SKAT will be represented by our vice president and managing director Bohdan Kozaczuk in the panel devoted to the role of road carriers in the economic transformation of Europe. #SKAT #Intermodalcongress
