Celebrating the 57th ASEAN Day: Strengthening a Connected and Resilient Community As the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) marks its 57th anniversary, the region comes together to celebrate the progress and unity achieved in building a connected and resilient community. The theme for this year's ASEAN Day underscores the importance of fostering connections and enhancing resilience among member states to address shared challenges and promote sustainable development. Established on August 8, 1967, ASEAN has evolved into a dynamic regional organization comprising ten diverse and culturally rich member countries. Over the past five decades, ASEAN has played a pivotal role in promoting peace, stability, and prosperity in Southeast Asia through dialogue, cooperation, and mutual understanding. Connectivity serves as a cornerstone of ASEAN's vision for regional integration. By enhancing physical, institutional, and people-to-people links, ASEAN has facilitated trade, investment, and cultural exchanges among member states. Infrastructure development projects, such as the ASEAN Single Window and the Master Plan on ASEAN Connectivity 2025, have bolstered connectivity and economic growth across the region. Resilience is another key tenet of ASEAN's community-building efforts. The region has demonstrated its ability to weather crises and challenges, including natural disasters, economic uncertainties, and public health emergencies. Through collaborative mechanisms and solidarity, ASEAN has strengthened its capacity to respond effectively to emergencies and support member states in times of need. The establishment of the ASEAN Community, comprising the Political-Security Community, Economic Community, and Socio-Cultural Community, reflects the organization's commitment to promoting a cohesive and inclusive regional identity. By advancing cooperation across these pillars, ASEAN aims to address common issues, uphold shared values, and improve the well-being of its people. As ASEAN looks towards the future, the region faces a rapidly evolving global landscape marked by technological advancements, environmental concerns, and geopolitical shifts. It is imperative for ASEAN to remain agile, adaptive, and united in navigating these challenges and seizing opportunities for growth and development. On this auspicious occasion of the 57th ASEAN Day, let us celebrate the spirit of unity and cooperation that defines the ASEAN community. By working together as a connected and resilient region, ASEAN reaffirms its commitment to building a brighter and more prosperous future for all its member states and their citizens. [On August 8, We Celebrate ASEAN Day!] Marking the founding of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) in 1967, ASEAN Day is celebrated every year on August 8. As the ASEAN Declaration was signed and agreed upon by all participating countries, ASEAN was officially formed and has grown ever since. In its 57th-year celebration, ASEAN Day lifts the theme of “Connected & Resilient Community”. This theme was taken to mainly focus on the milestones as well as what is expected in the future to develop a sustainable ASEAN. It serves as a reminder for us that what we can experience today was a fruitful outcome of what has been done since the formation of ASEAN. Despite the diverse challenges time has brought, regardless of the diverse community, ASEAN is still united and dynamic, advancing in pace with global progress. Throughout the year, ASEAN has been one of the key organizations that constantly works on economic and socio-cultural development in the Southeast Asia region. The growth and advancements we feel this day are the result of the continuous collaborations among the countries, in bridging Southeast Asia with today’s various technological advancements. As part of the ASEAN community and as part of the youth, this is a time to together celebrate and commemorate the joint effort to keep ASEAN alive and united. Happy ASEAN day! This May, RMI proudly celebrates Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) Heritage Month.    RMI's diverse team of 700 has roots from around the world, including China, India, and the Pacific islands -- and our work touches all of those regions too.     As we honor the contributions of our colleagues, we recognize the climate-related challenges faced by those across the Asia- Pacific region.     With temperatures in parts of Asia rising twice as fast as the global average and the Asia-Pacific region experiencing the highest proportion of weather-related disasters over the past decade, the need for a clean energy transition is urgent.    We are excited to share stories from our Asian and AAPI team members, highlighting how their cultural backgrounds shape their impactful work at RMI. Asia has shown resilience while facing a multitude of uncertainty, becoming a shining example of growth in a world full of crises. However, if we are to reach the UN's Sustainable Development Goals by 2030, we need to collectively focus on more than just our economic successes, through a gender-transformative and intersectional lens. We need to utilise our diversities and common goals to bring us together. Let's mobilise Asia's power as a whole, drawing strength from our divergent views and shared goals. The Uniqueness in Diversity Cultural diversity has shaped a unique and vibrant community in ASEAN. ASEAN has so much culture that has its authenticity. There are 10 nations in ASEAN. Myanmar, Thailand, Cambodia, Laos, Vietnam, Malaysia, Singapore, Brunei, Philippines, and Indonesia. Each country contributes to sharing its uniqueness with the world. Diversity is a unique aspect of Southeast Asia. ASEAN comprises hundreds of different ethnic groups with varying customs and traditions. Worldwide, the Southeast Asian region has the most diverse and complex ethnic structure. Diversity is become an important pillar for the ASEAN community, diversity is an advantage in ASEAN community development. We are diverse, and we can learn from each other. Even though we have many differences in our diversity. We should respect and appreciate each other, nothing is better and nothing is worse. We are equal.
