Hello friends family and acquaintances today is NATIONAL KOI DAY | July 7!
Today is July 7 and National Koi Day on the National Day Calendar and we are honoring the Koi fish today! Join us as we learn about the colorful Koi fish and celebrate the life of Hanako, the world's oldest Koi fish.
National Koi Day celebrates the Japanese Koi fish and brings attention to the exotic beauty of the fish. As a symbol of courage, patience, perseverance, and strength, the Koi fish has been celebrated in the Japanese culture for centuries.
The word "koi" comes from nishiki-goi, which means colored carp. Some say the translation also means "love." Either way, the Koi fish is a variety of Amur carp specifically bred for water gardens. Historically, records indicate breeding began in Niiggata, Japan, around the 19th century. Today, identification of the Koi fish depends on the hues and patterns of the color of the fish. The most common colors of the Koi fish are white, red, orange, yellow, blue, and black.
Koi fish are highly intelligent fish that also show affection, especially to their owners. They are known to interact with the people around them by displaying patterns of excitement when they "see" people they recognize. In fact, many Koi fish tend to get excited and swim rapidly when their owners are near. Owners can teach their Koi fish to do tricks, like stick their head out of the water during feeding time. However, Koi fish do carry some bacteria that can cause infections in humans. If you are planning to purchase Koi fish, it's important to learn about the fish before you buy.

Sand Dollars (Sea Urchine)
Domain:Eukaryota
Kingdom:Animalia
Phylum:Echinodermata
Subphylum:Echinozoa
Class:Echinoidea
Order Clypeasteroida (sand dollars)
Like all echinoderms, adult sea urchins have fivefold symmetry, but their pluteus larvae feature bilateral (mirror) symmetry, indicating that the sea urchin belongs to the Bilateria group of animal phyla, which also comprises the chordates and the arthropods, the annelids and the molluscs, and are found in every ocean and in every climate, from the tropics to the polar regions, and inhabit marine benthic (sea bed) habitats, from rocky shores to hadal zone depths. The fossil record of the Echinoids dates from the Ordovician period, some 450 million years ago. The closest echinoderm relatives of the sea urchin are the sea cucumbers (Holothuroidea), which like them are deuterostomes, a clade that includes the chordates. (Sand dollars are a separate order in the sea urchin class Echinoidea.)
Life cycle
Pluteus larva has bilateral symmetry.
In most cases, the female's eggs float freely in the sea, but some species hold onto them with their spines, affording them a greater degree of protection. The unfertilized egg meets with the free-floating sperm released by males, and develops into a free-swimming blastula embryo in as few as 12 hours. Initially a simple ball of cells, the blastula soon transforms into a cone-shaped echinopluteus larva. In most species, this larva has 12 elongated arms lined with bands of cilia that capture food particles and transport them to the mouth. In a few species, the blastula contains supplies of nutrient yolk and lacks arms, since it has no need to feed.
Several months are needed for the larva to complete its development, the change into the adult form beginning with the formation of test plates in a juvenile rudiment which develops on the left side of the larva, its axis being perpendicular to that of the larva. Soon, the larva sinks to the bottom and metamorphoses into a juvenile urchin in as little as one hour. In some species, adults reach their maximum size in about five years. The purple urchin becomes sexually mature in two years and may live for twenty.
Longevity
Red sea urchins were originally thought to live 7 to 10 years but recent studies have shown that they can live for more than 100 years. Canadian red urchins have been found to be around 200 years old.
As food
The gonads of both male and female sea urchins, usually called sea urchin roe or corals, are culinary delicacies in many parts of the world, especially Japan. In Japan, sea urchin is known as uni (うに), and its roe can retail for as much as ¥40,000 ($360) per kilogram;[73] it is served raw as sashimi or in sushi, with soy sauce and wasabi. Japan imports large quantities from the United States, South Korea, and other producers. Japan consumes 50,000 tons annually, amounting to over 80% of global production.Japanese demand for sea urchins has raised concerns about overfishing.

In honor of National Houseplant Appreciation Day, here's a quick video on how to care for 🌷 orchids 101.
I have about 15 orchids, some over 10 years old. They bloom for about 3 months and are an incredible source of joy.
Here are my quick tips:
1️⃣ Water temperature should be lukewarm
2️⃣ Water consistently once per week
3️⃣ Water roots and leaves generously, let the water run
4️⃣ Based on your potting soil - bark vs moss, adjust your watering schedule
5️⃣ Direct sunlight for your orchids, such as on a window sill with morning sun, is preferred.
Just 10-15 minutes a week, and you have a house full of blooms for months.
Do you have any tips for being a plant whisperer? #orchids#mindfulliving
When we move too fast, we sometimes forget to stop and smell the roses. Today is National Houseplant Appreciation; take a few moments to smell the roses. 🌹
