On this day 40 years ago a Super Bowl ad ran that would not only be a game changer for the company but for the marketing industry and Super Bowl commercials as a whole. Apple's Macintosh 1984 commercial was aired and it was unlike anything we were accustom to. The interesting part is that it almost didn't get played. Apple's Board of Directors felt it was the worst commercial they'd ever seen. Fortunately, Steve Jobs and the marketing team knew they had something special and ignored the doubters. Recently I was watching an episode of Seinfeld where Kramer is suing Sue Ellen Mischke the heiress to the Oh Henry! candy bar fortune after she was flouting society's conventions (per Jackie Chiles). So what does that have to do with the Apple's commercial? In this episode Kramer is on the verge of winning his legal battle but instead of listening to his lawyer he turns to his Caddy sitting behind him for advice. Against his attorney's recommendation Kramer insists that they follow the caddy's advice because Stan's the Man. It caused Kramer to lose the case! It made me chuckle because how many times in marketing are creative ideas watered down or even pulled because of the advise of people who are really good in their area of expertise but may not have the vision to fully see the calculated creative risk/reward. Stan is probably an amazing caddy but he's not a lawyer. Jackie on the other hand could see the legal victory before them but at that point Kramer put his trust in the wrong person. Developing creative content requires a lot of trust in the creative team you've hired. There are plenty of marketing campaigns that weren't successful but in many of those cases you will find that somewhere the creative became focused on things that truly weren't in the brand's best interest. Many of the greatest and most effective ads in our lifetime required putting trust in the right people and stepping out of the crowd. #marketing #superbowl #seinfeld #apple #1984commercial

I’d add, for creatives: ▪️Do make art that invites your audience to put in work. Don’t dumb down your message. ▪️Do take chances with various styles. Don’t forget you need no permission to do so. ▪️Do save the bulk of your trust for your voice. Don’t allot but a bare minimum for buzz. ▪️Do trust your process. Don’t forget you got there by listening.
