Last week, we hosted a special graduation for our Power of Work program! The Power of Work team, under the leadership of Director of Community-Based Services Kimberly Boyd-Lane, GCDF, GCDFI, CEBP, has demonstrated excellence in operations since its inception in 2007. The program has enrolled more than 15,000 participants and has achieved 5,187 job placements. This outstanding accomplishment has given the Cabinet of Health and Family Services, the Department of Community Based Services and the Division of Family Support the confidence to award the Kentucky Work Program TANF and SNAP contract to Goodwill without an intermediary beginning today, July 1.

It’s summertime! The academic year at colleges and universities has concluded and our campuses have gone quiet(er) in terms of students. My 10-month faculty just went off contract on June 15th and except for those teaching summer classes, faculty offices have gone quiet(er) as well. As we look forward to vacation time with family to mentally recharge, summer can be a time to recharge professionally. Whether it is your time to read that stack of work-related books you could not get to, earn a certification, take a graduate course, or overall upskill in a new area, what is the ONE thing you want to accomplish professionally this summer? I’ll go first…I have some new certifications I need to earn in preparation for my new job here at Carroll. More on that in another post. 😊

This is what I’m talking about! Check out this program!
The Office of Career Success and Experiential Education recently piloted the International Career Advancement Program to transform the first-year experience for international students on the New York City and Long Island campuses. The 12-week program gave students a chance to work on U.S.-based career competency topics such as résumé building, interviewing/elevator pitch, self and career exploration, and careers in nonprofit management. They also worked on a team project and presented to peers, faculty, and staff.

At the 2023 National Association of Extension Program & Staff Development Professionals Conference, I had the opportunity to repurpose an awesome research poster Matt Benge and I created with Amy Harder back in 2008 by posing these questions: How does your institution support Extension employees pursuing graduate degrees? (outside of tuition waivers) How can/should we support our employees pursuing their graduate degrees? We had excellent conversation around that with some ideas generated, but I would love to hear from others! How would you answer those questions for your employees or for yourself? What more can be done to really support working professionals pursuing graduate degrees?

Recently, Paul Fain highlighted the need of youth apprenticeship programs in our workforce in his newsletter “The Job.” He instantly noted that employers need to take a more active role in the U.S. education system to establish career pathways for a broader range of Americans, especially those without four-year degrees. Despite bipartisan support and the pressing demands of the labor market, progress in this area has been slow at best. Noting two Brookings Institute reports (read them here and here), he commented that the best approach to solving this need is through regional, multi-sector coalitions, a goal CareerWise and our partners have been working toward for years. He quotes Annelies Goger, a The Brookings Institution fellow and co-author of the report: “The changes that we propose involve a transformative shift in how employers in the U.S. have seen themselves, from being a consumer of talent to being a co-producer of talent… Eventually, more employers will come to the conclusion that they have to play a more active role in creating the prepared workforce they need.” You can read the entire newsletter where he explores “A Unified Voice on Workforce Needs” here. https://lnkd.in/g_wEEgqn

Is there anything better than spending the day with counselors? This week our team was in Denver with school counselor corps grantees talking ICAP, blurring counseling domains- social emotional, academic and career & exploring work based learning and other interventions Some of the things we heard: -How do we get to career advising when we have students not getting basic needs met? -How do our counselors connect better with CTE teams to get exposed to trends in the labor market? -How do we address barriers to accessing work based learning? -How do we know we’re reaching students that need in school career development the most? -How do we start career interventions earlier so that students see themselves in top jobs? And what are they already doing? -Bringing employers in as a partner in planning WBL -Connecting student interests with their academic and career goals -Bringing parents and families into the conversation
