This is just as true for autistic adults in the workplace. We experience genuine pain from may of the experiences we have to endure (loud lights, anyone?) and have to push through that every single day.
If someone has the flu, you don't usually expect them to be as productive because their body is just not able to keep with their baseline. Autistic people are expected to keep up with everyone else's "baseline" while in the same volume of distress almost every day.
According to the UN, only 16% of autistic adults are employed. I would like you to sit with that number for a while. Out of a hundred autistic adults, only sixteen of us are employed.
We live in a world that is hostile to autistic people. It's incredibly overstimulating, has so many strange rules that are antithetical to how our minds work, and we are expected to always have "normal_human.exe" running, which takes up a good chunk of our processing capacity. This is, as you can imagine, infuriating.
Autistic people have the ability to contribute a lot to the world. We have many useful, necessary skills to share. Yet we are so frequently left behind by society and discarded and told we aren't useful. And because we aren't "useful," we aren't worth keeping around.
Today is the first day of our
