Resonance is proud to be working with over 20 expert housing partners across the UK. Our dedicated property teams work hand in hand with each housing partner to establish the best locations and property types to be purchased. Homes are then refurbished to a high standard to meet the needs of tenants, in the heart of local communities and near essential services. Our housing partners provide specialist services to tenants to support them in a variety of ways, including helping to integrate them back into their local community, addressing health and wellbeing issues, employment opportunities, support to understand finances and to sustain their tenancies. The Building Skills for the Future report by the London Homes Coalition has officially launched - londonhomescoalition.co.uk Based on a first-of-its-kind analysis of the consolidated asset management and new build programmes of the housing associations in the Coalition, the report reveals a critical labour and skills shortage that threatens the maintenance, retrofit and provision of social and affordable housing in the capital. It also provides three strategic solutions to address this crucial challenge. We need to act now and work together with government, industry leaders, and education providers to future-proof London’s social housing sector, ensuring the provision of high-quality affordable housing for its residents. Our work does not stop here. This is only the first step of a long-term collaborative effort, and we want to bring more committed organisations to this initiative to help us turn these recommendations into reality. In search of housing excellence - what future for housing awards? Over the past five years we've tried to take a look and understand why #socialhousing sometimes seems to be at odds with the general populus. So let's start 2024 with how do we identify and reward service excellence? Some of you may have seen this Channel 4 piece around poor housing conditions, it's mainly the first couple of minutes outside a housing awards event that I was interested in and quite frankly if it doesn't make you feel uncomfortable then it should. Let me be clear where I am on this. During my time as a party planner I produced a number of awards ceremonies and in the last few years I have been a judge for them, so I am not anti-awards ceremonies as such but are they the best vehicle to recognise and promote housing excellence. On the plus side, they can capture 'unsung' areas of housing, they can showcase examples which can help others solve similar problems thereby reducing duplication, they nurture relationships and create new networks between organisations. They can inspire and motivate those attending and if the income generated allows other services to be provided for free isn't that a good cross subsidy? On the flip side - Externally they can be seen as an extravagance celebrating a failing sector at the time of a cost of living crisis, The examples lack academic rigour and context, so therefore their transferable value is questionable. It can often come down to how good a submission is written rather than quality of innovation being demonstrated. Finally with decreasing tenant satisfaction and increasing complaints being upheld by the ombudsman is this the right image the sector wishes to portray at this time? So what is the best way to identify, recognise and showcase housing excellence? Happy as always to hear your views colleagues. Ian Wright's review of social housing awards events needs discussion. In theory they are a wonderful way to showcase excellence and be a vehicle for innovation and collaboration. In practice, the model is flawed and we have encouraged it. Rather than promoting social housing excellence, the majority of the effort is often spent promoting sponsorship and selling tables.... and this can be a lucrative business. Many are suspicious that the winners are those that crafted the best submissions rather than the most deserving, and potentially even those willing to spend the most on sponsorship and/or paid attendance. The answer is to reinvent the awards so that the focus is on promoting excellence and encouraging collaboration. The challenge is if this can be made to cover its costs? An interesting debate which, for the good of the sector and its external perception, needs exploring. I'd be keen to be part of that debate.
