As many people know waste is a major "pet hate"of mine and I am delighted to see initiatives like this gaining ground. Fit out and "defit"/make good is a major cost to companies be they start ups, scale ups, SME's or multinationals and taking good advice in this area is vital from both a CapEx and sustainability viewpoint. A big component of the #tourism industry is #museums. Pretty much each one is a #nonprofitorganization. Pretty much all of them are always trying to raise additional revenue, whether through donations, admissions or in many cases gift shops. To that end, I have a few simple suggestions for anyone running those #museum gift shops: 1: Have your gift shop open 30 minutes prior to museum opening and close 30 minutes after the museum closes. You in essence have a captive audience. You should not be turning out the lights kicking people out. If anything, you should be serving free refreshments after hours. 2: Use a modern #pointofsale (#pos) system that integrates your physical store, its inventory and your museum's #ecommerce website into one cohesive system. You'll be able to run pop-up events and the like with ease. Suggestions: Clover, Lightspeed Commerce, and Shopify. 3: Develop more unique and original merchandise. Just slapping your logo on the same coffee mugs, t-shirts and hoodies does not cut it. Focus on quality, not quantity. 3a: If you are an art museum, offer on-demand prints on canvas (not just posters), with optional framing. 4: Negotiate good shipping terms. Many people travel by airplane. Luggage space is precious. Having to schlep something home is oftentimes not an option. Take that hassle off the table. Most of the time, you will not need to worry about speed. Ground will more than suffice. In fact, in some cases, a customer may in fact want an option to delay shipping so their goodies do not beat them home. There are plenty of opportunities to make the gift shops a more critical component of the balance sheet.

For the next two weeks, we are running a Pop-Up Op Shop at 2/145 Nelson Street, Wallsend. This is part of our Community Textile Recovery Initiative, a project supported by the City of Newcastle, Australia Community Support grant. This project was developed on the back of working with local op shops to establish the Wallsend Op Shop Trail as a sustainable tourist destination. Some of the key challenges we recognised that op shops face when it comes to managing donations include: 👯♀️ Volunteers: a decline in volunteer support post-Covid has created a backlog of donations to process and increased workload for volunteers. Then there is the abundance of unsuitable donations: 👙❄ Out of season: Limited storage capacity means the majority of out of season donations are sent for export. 🚿🐖 Stained or dirty: Lack of washing facilities and current volunteer workload means that washing items is rarely viable. 🚨🧐 Damaged and worn out: Lack of mending facilities and again, current volunteer workload means that mending and repairing items is rarely viable. To prevent unsuitable clothing from being exported or landfilled, our team, in collaboration with Ragtraders Newy and The Conscious Exchange (Emma Simcox), have been working on the back end of op shops to keep textiles in circulation in our community for longer! As a result, we have ended up with quite a haul of quality and unique pieces which have been lovingly soaked, scrubbed, steamed, and stitched, and are now ready for their new homes! We are in preparation mode for the National Running Show and want to show off our stats to show what we have achieved since we started as a Community Interest Company in September 2022. Since then, we have prevented 9,173 items of sportswear from heading to landfill. This equates to to around 4,000kg. • 6,866 (74.85%) items has been redistributed to charities / organisations who help individuals in need. Full list is in my comment to this post. • 1,001 (10.91%) items have been resold through our pop-up stalls and our online shop. • 846 (9.22%) items have been repurposed. This includes medal ribbons and damaged clothing that has been sent to Little ReCreations to turn them into running belts and other running gear. • 338 (3.68%) items we currently have in stock on the Preloved Sports website. • 65 items are awaiting processing. • 36 items have been rebranded with the Preloved Sports or Re-Action logos. 💚 All of our stock will be available to purchase at the National Running Shop 💚 We are extremely proud of what the Preloved Sports team have achieved so far, reducing waste heading to landfill whilst supporting people in need. 2023 has been an eye opener for us. Families in extreme poverty where the system has failed them. Individuals who have made bad choices but rejected by the system and the communities. Those who have been involved in an accident that has changed their life, forcing them to sleep rough. We are seeing an increase in this demand and we are looking at funding so we can expand our operations and help support more people in need. Our aim is to have a unit that will act as a shop and warehouse and a one we can expand to form a community hub for those who feel they are socially distant from the communities. It’s an ambition that I hope to bring to reality in the near future as our dining room is almost at maximum capacity.
