This article captures the depths of helplessness and despair over the last two years. For me, it’s about exposing the unethical injustice in our justice systems. Police and the law are supposed to be the unbiased voice of justice. Justice speaks to the truth and is essential to our knowledge and understanding of what it means to live. It is about accountability, taking responsibility and correcting broken or fractured systems. Ethically and morally, it is about repentance. Those who are responsible for the harm are the ones who take action, learn from it and repair it. Tomorrow is the only thing a parent should live for. In isolation, our families are facing this alone, but when you bring together 562 grieving families, you begin to see the magnitude of this problem. Our elders and old people have been fighting for us for generations in hopes that we don’t have to. Yet here we are, still literally fighting for our children's lives in the hopes that one day they don’t have to. With the fog of grief beginning to lift - I’m beginning to think more strategically about how we can abolish the gross inequities. Killing someone is something that you can’t undo. We all have a responsibility to critique and hold our lawmakers and law enforcement to account because the privilege of being an officer should not extend to violence leading to death. If people would be willing to speak, listen and act, it could be a powerful platform for substantive change 🖤💛❤️

Did you know that until 1891, husbands had the right to beat their wives? The law considered a married couple as one legal person, with the husband in charge. As a result, husbands could not be prosecuted for 'crimes' against their wives, including physical abuse, as long as it was deemed to be for the purpose of correction. Although new laws were introduced, domestic abuse remained largely hidden and was often considered a private matter within families. Despite increased awareness of domestic abuse, there has been a lack of understanding regarding its various forms and the frequency of incidents. Additionally, a cultural tendency persisted to blame the victim of abuse as much, if not more, than the abuser. The UK is making efforts to demonstrate its commitment to supporting survivors and holding perpetrators accountable. The introduction of the landmark Domestic Abuse Act in 2021, and the appointment of Domestic Abuse Commissioner Nicole Jacobs is a crucial step in this direction. Her primary areas of focus include providing public leadership on domestic abuse issues and overseeing and monitoring the provision of domestic abuse services across England and Wales. Though progress has been made, there is still a long way to go. Nevertheless, there is hope and belief that positive change is on the horizon. #safeguarding #domesticabuse #domesticabuseawareness
