Parker’s Party Review: In a change to my usual conference review theme, here is my take on the ISDA Annual Christmas Reception. There were lots of friendly faces that I’ve known for years, from ISDA, the banks, the buy-side and the law firms. Here in the top left picture, I’m with ISDA CEO Scott O'Malia In the top right picture, is the “Initial Margin” gang of Mark Higgins of BNY Mellon and Jonathan Martin of DRS and me. We collaborated for six years on Derivatives Initial Margin education and work projects, travelling the world, and recording videos presenting to audiences on Phase 1-6 of the #initialmargin #collteral rules. In recent years, the ISDA Christmas event had become more serious and smaller. At my first one, in 2006, just before joining Mayer Brown there were 10,000 invitations and 1500 attendees. In the year before the pandemic it had become a more studious crowd of 200. The dance floor of 2006, had been replaced by carol singers. Well this year, the party vibe, and a packed event, were back at COYA Restaurant & Pisco Bar restaurant in the City. It was upbeat in both demeanour and outlook, and great fun. The carol singers had been replaced by a saxophonist, who complemented a DJ, and entertained the new and long-standing generations of derivatives practitioners. Perhaps that buoyant feeling reflects the culmination of ISDA’s many long years of putting derivatives #regulatory infrastructure into place since the financial crisis, and confidence for the industry’s future as a well regulated industry, with a world class trade body in ISDA. I did rather like the carol singers though. Must be getting old. #ISDA #derivatives

"The thing is about mutuals and cooperatives is that because they are owned and controlled by their members, this resilience comes from the decision making process. It's not driven by the need to get private, individual or shareholder profit, it's driven by the needs of the customers and members they serve." 👏 A great explanation about what makes us different. In case you missed it, watch the full video below 👇
Our CEO, Rose Marley, appeared on Sky News this morning on Business Live with Ian King, to state the case for co-operatives and mutuals. We know business as usual just doesn't cut it and Rose did a great job of representing a sector which is more resilient; more productive; retains wealth locally; provides good jobs; and gives more people ownership and control. It follows a joint sector call - with partners including the Building Societies Association, Association of British Credit Unions, and Association of Financial Mutuals - for the next government to back business with purpose beyond profit. Watch and share the Ian King interview and read more about that call for government support here: https://shorturl.at/oGILZ
