🌟 Celebrating Autism Acceptance Month! 🌟 As an autistic woman navigating the workforce, this month holds profound significance for me. It's a time to reflect on my personal journey, acknowledge the hurdles overcome, and celebrate the strides made towards true acceptance and inclusion. In the past, I've faced the challenge of being infantilized, an all-too-common experience for many autistic individuals. Despite my qualifications and capabilities, there were times when I felt overlooked, underestimated, and even patronized. The struggle to obtain proper accommodations and the frustration of not being taken seriously by peers were constant battles. However, it's also important to acknowledge and appreciate the positive experiences I've had. A big shout out to my previous company, Enterprise Mobility, and the amazing team within Group 68 who always advocated for me and my needs. My current company, Aya Healthcare, is another example of a company making significant headway for accommodations for their employees, and I am immensely grateful for these positive experiences. I've witnessed remarkable progress through other organizations as well. Organizations like the Autistic Self Advocacy Network The National Autistic Society and Autistic Women & Nonbinary Network are at the forefront, tirelessly working to break down barriers and dismantle stigma. Their dedication and advocacy are instrumental in fostering a more inclusive environment for all individuals, regardless of neurodiversity. This month, I'm committed to spending time educating allistic (non-autistic) people about the autistic experience and celebrating autistic voices. It's crucial to amplify our narratives and ensure that our perspectives are heard and valued. It is also important to address a concerning trend. Often, Autism Acceptance/Awareness month is taken over by Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) communities in a way that unfortunately seems to celebrate/advertise ABA therapy. As an autistic individual, I believe it's essential to emphasize that April is about Autism Acceptance/Awareness, NOT about uplifting one therapy that has very mixed opinions from within the autistic community. Let's use this month to uplift autistic voices, promote understanding, and advocate for truly inclusive practices. A personal note from Debbie Simon Pacholder: April 2 is a date that inspires me. The first World Autism Awareness Day was on April 2, 2008. On that same morning, our twin girls were born. The synchronicity of these two events was remarkably uplifting, as our older son has autism and is nonverbal. Back then, my wildest visions saw my daughters finding a medical breakthrough for autism treatment. But the extraordinary bond our children would always share seemed no less significant. When Matthew was diagnosed with autism in 2005, the landscape of awareness was limited. Information and resources were scarce. The unfamiliar journey for families of children with autism was lonely and worrisome: what would the future hold for our children? After our girls were born, a shift began. Families began connecting. The "Light it Up Blue" campaign launched. Autism Awareness Day became Autism Awareness Month. An understanding that individuals with autism each face their own set of challenges started to emerge. Acceptance of neurodiversity was growing. Diversity takes many forms. It is not limited to approval of one’s gender, race, or nationality. Celebrating diversity means much more than acceptance. It is not simply the number of languages spoken that is important, but the messages sent through grander acts of inclusion. Now, people are joining forces to expand the definition of diversity to integrate neurodiverse individuals into the workplace. Some small businesses are employing individuals with autism and are even opening for that purpose. Companies are offering employment programs and accommodations to support individuals with autism in fulfilling their potential – yet meeting them at their own level. Organizations are forming to continue to spread awareness and to facilitate placement. Recent studies have shown that workplaces who hire neurodiverse staff exceed the productivity of those that do not. This evolution is reassuring that the growing number of individuals with autism will each find their place. My inspiration for this 17th World Autism Awareness Day is to honor the progress being made to recognize neurodiversity and the unique perspective it brings. Today is World Autism Awareness and Acceptance Day! 💜 Today is a tool to foster an inclusive and caring society for all and to ensure autistic individuals can lead full and meaningful lives. It’s an instrument for raising awareness of neurodivergence, that is, brains that process information in a way that is not typical of most individuals. Today is a celebration! My autistic brother, Troy, is truly one of a kind and he inspires me every day. He and other neurodivergent individuals have wonderful and important voices. We MUST do our best to receive, respect, and value these voices. There is a myriad of social and business benefits to doing so. It’s also the right thing to do and incumbent on us as decent human beings. Today is a reflection of how far we’ve come in the process of changing perspectives, building awareness, and creating inclusion. Much has changed since I first started Magnusmode. There is more awareness (and less education required) about why having inclusive services is important. Magnusmode has over sixty companies and venues on board as Inclusion Partners (Huntington National Bank, NJ Transit, Trader Joe’s, Whirlpool, Toronto Pearson International Airport, CIBC to name a few). They get it: True acceptance is creating a world where everyone is connected to the support they need, when they need it. We’ll be launching with even more Inclusion Partners this month! I’m so humbled and proud of our impact within these organizations and the communities they serve. Today is an acknowledgement that as a society there is still much work to be done. There are autistic individuals across North America and around the world who are still excluded, still not considered, still unemployed, still marginalized. Today is a call to action. We invite customer-facing venues and companies, and the individuals who work there, to join us in this Inclusion Revolution. Get involved: Embrace and champion initiatives that bring autistic and neurodivergent acceptance to your organization. Seek support to ensure you build with accessibility in mind. Engage, gather, and implement feedback from the autistic community to build inclusive practices. Each day presents another opportunity to make a difference, to start or take another step in your accessibility journey. Make it count! Being different isn't a deficit. The truth is, it's a gift. We have everything to gain by creating an accessible world. As a parent to an autistic child, I've embarked on a journey filled with unique challenges, profound lessons, and endless love. 2 April is celebrated as "Autism Awareness Day", and on this day I invite you to join me in fostering a deeper understanding of autism and embracing neurodiversity for a brighter, more inclusive future. Autism, a complex neurodevelopmental condition, manifests differently in each individual, creating a rich tapestry of strengths, challenges, and perspectives. From sensory sensitivities to intense focus on interests, from creative thinking to challenges in social interactions - every aspect of autism highlights the beauty and diversity of human experience. To improve our awareness about autism and support individuals on the spectrum, here are a few key points to keep in mind: Embrace Neurodiversity: Instead of viewing autism as a disorder to be fixed, let's celebrate neurodiversity as an essential part of our collective human experience. Each individual, regardless of their neurological makeup, has unique talents, insights, and contributions to offer. Practice Empathy and Inclusion: Understanding and acceptance are the cornerstones of building a more inclusive society. "Knowledge is power. Information is power. The secreting or hoarding of knowledge or information may be an act of tyranny camouflaged as humility" – Robin Morgan   I’ve seen some of the “best of the best” of autism programming worldwide. Often, those receiving best-in-class interventions are the socioeconomically privileged, usually the racial majority, typically urban dwelling, and frequently with a familial support structure. My initial exposure to this inequity was one of my first teaching gigs in a school district that was racially divided by geography; the schools with a majority of brown children had a staff-to-student ratio in their special education classrooms that was significantly different from schools with a majority of white children. As my career progressed, I realized that one thing that contributed to inequity was access to information and knowledge.   I’ve worked with a few tech companies focused on increasing access to effective interventions for people with disabilities. Although technology has some challenges (e.g., the digital divide), technology can also act as a purveyor of information and knowledge and, as Ms. Morgan states, POWER. The Interagency Autism Coordinating Committee (IACC) 2023 Strategic Plan Update also sees the power in technology. There are seven questions IACC is trying to address, with one of them being: What Services and Supports Are Needed to Maximize Health and Well-Being? One of three recommendations listed under this question is:   Develop and improve technology-based interventions that will maximize positive outcomes for individuals on the autism spectrum. (see page 77 of the report).   Proof Positive: Autism Wellbeing Alliance is committed to equity in access to knowledge and information.
