In my first semester of studying power relations, I was fascinated by the concept of agency, so I wrote a paper on power relations in the restaurant where I was working at the time. The abstract of the paper states: The aim of this paper is to conduct an analysis of the power relations of a specific unit and to prove that they are an outcome of an organisational structure as well as of the actions of the individuals participating in it. What I was interested in was to examine the wisdom of my then general manager. His words: “You, the FOH, have the power to wow our guests beyond their expectations”. Bingo! What he was teaching us was the power of human agency. We have the power to influence what happens for us and our guests/customers. We have the power to create a heart-warming reality for us and others. Whether selling a takeaway coffee or serving dinner, we have the power to be a catalyst for a fantastic experience.
