With the release of NECOM’s wholesale electricity market framework, it is clear that our country is on the brink of a truly competitive electricity industry. This first draft of the market code is a result of the President’s commitment to addressing the energy crisis through this crisis committee. Once approved, the market code will provide the framework for managing the transition to a market driven wholesale market. This is a future that NOA is already contributing to, ensuring our place in helping our country unlock access to the #potentialofzero. On August 8, Power Africa announced that its Coordinator, Richard Nelson, and Sun Africa CEO, Adam Cortese, signed a non-binding collaborative agreement. This marks a significant milestone in Power Africa's mission to expand access to reliable electricity across sub-Saharan Africa. Sun Africa is committed to contributing to this initiative by adding up to 6,500 megawatts (MW) of new energy generation, potentially reaching over eight million households and businesses, with an estimated $10 billion in financing. Both Power Africa and Sun Africa are committed to advancing sustainable and reliable energy solutions across Africa. They aim to accelerate the adoption of renewable energy and close the energy gap in the region. #energy #africa #electrification

Exciting news from Norway based RE developer Scatec ASA , planning to expand its solar power installation capacity by 28.6 MWp and 19.2 MWh of battery storage capacity for its plants in Maroua and Guider. This upgrade will bring the PV plants, total operation capacity to 64.4 MW and 38.2 MWh of batteries storage. This is an enormous advancement in improving access to electricity in the Far North (Maroua) and North (Guider) regions. Both regions, represent the largest markets for off-grid electrification solutions in the country. Approximately more than 921,000 and 732,000 people respectively in the Far North and Northern regions could be served via DES. In 2019, with Lawrence Bibaya we once carried out a feasibility study for the development of solar PV projects in Cameroon. The results proved significant potential (economic, environmental and social benefits), however this should be accompanied by sound policy measures. In 2021 in an article we wrote in the Journal of Cleaner Production, we suggested some policy countermeasures for financing and investment challenges for PV development in Cameroon; https://lnkd.in/eRwCXbAC Furthermore, I'm happy to observe that the equity financing mechanism was effectively used to close the Scatec PV projects in Guider and Maroua. Hopefully in the nearest future, we could see other grounded solar PV projects, such as; the 75MW plant in Mbalmayo by JCM Power or the 50MW Elan project by Sturdee Energy finally get realized and operational in Cameroon. Scatec is taking steps to address persistent power outages in Cameroon. Almost a year after its launch, the firm has secured approval to expand its solar power operations in Maroua and Guider, adding 28.6 MWp of solar power and 19.2 MWh of battery storage. This expansion aims to enhance energy stability, reduce reliance on diesel, and mitigate blackouts, potentially serving 200,000 households with 141.5 GWh of electricity annually.
