Rheinmetall acquires majority stake in Romanian vehicle manufacturer Automecanica Mediaș SRL Continuing to expand its presence in Romania as a leading manufacturer of military vehicles, Rheinmetall is taking up a majority share in Romanian vehicle maker Automecanica Mediaș. The acquisition deepens the Düsseldorf-based technology enterprise’s footprint in Central Europe, opening the door to new customer countries in the region with substantial sales potential. Rheinmetall already has locations in two other countries on NATO’s eastern flank, Hungary and Lithuania. In December 2023, moreover, Romania awarded Rheinmetall a major air defence order worth €328 million. Through Rheinmetall Landsysteme GmbH, the Group will hold a 72.5% stake in the company, which will operate in Romania under the name Rheinmetall Automecanica SRL. The remaining shares in the company will stay in private hands. Choosing the right materials is crucial when building supersonic airplanes, such as the F-22 and F-35 American jets. They must be lightweight, strong, and heat-resistant to allow aircraft to reach and operate at supersonic speeds and temperatures up to 1,650 degrees Celsius. Commonly, these jets are made of aluminum, titanium, ceramics, and composites. Aluminum is lightweight and durable, titanium is strong and lightweight, ceramics are heat-resistant, and composites can be customized to meet specific aircraft needs. Chemical engineers play a fundamental role in choosing the materials for equipment. Their responsibilities include developing and characterizing new materials and evaluating existing materials for use in aerospace applications. 🇦🇹👏 The Österreichisches Bundesheer (Austrian Armed Forces) has received its first batch of military utility vehicles from IVECO DEFENCE VEHICLES. The transfer follows a $46 million deal for 125 vehicles, 70 command support systems, and 55 radio links. Part of Austria’s recent force modernization efforts, the MUVs will replace the country’s 900 Pinzgauers, some of which have been in the army since the 1970s. The military relies on the private sector to fill capability gaps to maintain its technological superiority over its enemies.       A great example of that relationship can be found in the KC-135.      The KC-135 was born out of a competition for a jet-powered aerial refueling tanker held by U.S. Strategic Command (SAC) in 1954. Although the competition was originally won by Lockheed, Boeing inevitably won the contract, as its tanker was already flying and could be repurposed sooner.  It also helped that during the demonstration the pilot flying the KC-135 did a barrel roll over the generals making the decision.     In 1954, the United States Air Force placed an order for 29 KC-135s but would eventually have 820 of multiple variants of the aircraft.  It was the cold war mate to the B-52 and can be seen in iconic movies such as Dr. Strangelove and Strategic Air Command.     "The first pilots of the KC-135 have long since passed away, and the last pilots have yet to be born.  Flying a (now) 65 year old aircraft for another 30 years into the future requires continual innovation and thinking of new ways to get the mission done."-USF Institute of Applied Engineering’s COO, USAF Ret. The copies, picked up on satellite imagery, include mock-ups of F-35 and F-22 fighter jets, among the most advanced used by the US and its allies. They are thought likely to be low-tech additions to the comprehensive overhaul of the Chinese military overseen by President Xi since he came to power. The desert, the Taklamakan in Xinjiang province, is already home to military testing — the jets join models of an American Ford-class aircraft carrier and two Arleigh Burke-class destroyers, which were revealed three years ago.
