The International Hydropower Association (IHA) has released its Annual Report for 2023/24, highlighting a year of significant achievements and transitions. As Roger Gill passed the presidency to Malcolm Turnbull, the IHA made substantial strides in promoting sustainable hydropower as a key player in the global energy transition. Among the landmark events of the year was the introduction of the inaugural World Hydropower Outlook, a comprehensive report outlining the future potential and challenges for hydropower development worldwide. This document sets out a realistic roadmap to enable hydropower and other renewables to deliver against net zero targets. Another major development was the launch of the Hydropower Sustainability Alliance, an initiative designed to enhance the industry’s commitment to sustainability and responsible practices. This alliance brings together key players from across the sector to share best practices and drive continuous improvement. The IHA also hosted its largest-ever in-person World Hydropower Congress, bringing together leaders, experts, and stakeholders from around the globe to discuss and collaborate on the future of hydropower. This event underscored the increasing recognition of hydropower’s vital role in achieving global renewable energy goals. It Is Time To Tap Into #HydropowerInvestmentOpportunities. : With the #cleanenergytransition well underway, there is plenty of exciting news about increasing deployment of #renewableenergy solutions like solar. Yet as more of these #variablerenewables connect to the grid, there is an increasing need for #firm, #flexible, and #renewablepower and #storage to balance supply and demand. One #potentialsolutionishydropower, which has long proven it can meet that need and provides 96 % of the nation's utility-scale #energystorage capacity. In fact, #hydropower's longstanding reputation as a #reliablesourceofenergy and #storage may ironically be one of the reasons people often assume it is "tapped out" of investment opportunities, but this is not the case. Far from being tapped out, hydropower, including #pumpedstorage hydropower (#PSH), still has enormous potential for growth, particularly for small- and medium-sized projects (or those that produce up to 30 MW of power). Dams that do currently produce power can often be updated to increase capacity. There are also millions of miles of waterways, including both rivers and canals, that can be utilized for in-stream hydropower. Key findings of a new report, Hydropower Investment and Public-Private Ecosystem Assessment, developed by the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (National Renewable Energy Laboratory), providing a comprehensive analysis of both the risks and opportunities for investing in small- to medium-sized hydropower and PSH projects. : #Mediumsizedprojects offer significant opportunities for low-impact hydropower development. The current medium-sized project pipeline includes projects with a total capacity of more than 1 GW and involves capacity additions, nonpowered dam retrofits, hydropower generation in conduits, PSH, new stream-reach development, and hybrid projects that combine multiple renewable technologies. New #technologyinnovations and the variety of sites on which #hydropower could be developed present potential opportunities for future investment. Top areas of interest include: Modular conduit hydropower , Nonpowered dam resources , Hybrid plant configurations and Closed-loop PSH innovation. Investors surveyed for this study generally expressed the greatest level of interest in supporting capacity additions at existing facilities. A new guide aimed at reducing investment risks in pumped storage hydropower (PSH) projects was released today. The guide, titled “Enabling New Pumped Storage Hydropower: A guidance note for decision makers to de-risk investments in pumped storage hydropower,” offers recommendations to help key decision-makers navigate the development and financing of PSH projects. Pumped storage hydropower is the largest form of renewable energy storage, with nearly 200GW of installed capacity worldwide, providing over 90% of all long-duration energy storage. With over 400 projects currently in operation, PSH plays a crucial role in supporting the global shift toward renewable energy. The guidance note, developed by a working group chaired by Bechtel Corporation and supported by the International Hydropower Association (IHA), aims to enhance project development and delivery by providing tools for effective risk management and financial strategies. IHA President Malcolm Turnbull highlighted the importance of long-duration energy storage, stating: “The failure to adequately focus on this need for long duration electricity storage is the ignored crisis within the energy crisis. PSH has the unique capacity to resolve this challenge at huge scale, well beyond the reach of even the largest batteries.
