The second edition of the Brussels Hydropower Day, organized by ETIP HYDROPOWER, convened experts, policymakers, and stakeholders to delve into the crucial role of hydropower in spearheading the transition to clean energy. Held on 16th April 2024, this significant event, operating under the theme "The important role of hydropower as a catalyst in the clean and safe energy transition under uncertainties," took place within the ambit of the Sustainable Energy Days of the European Commission. Keynote speakers set the tone for the day-long discussions, highlighting the pivotal role of hydropower in Europe's sustainable future. Kristian Ruby, Secretary General at EURELECTRIC, stressed the necessity for clean electricity, with projections indicating over half of energy consumption must derive from clean sources by 2040 and 2050. He underscored hydropower's unique potential in stabilizing the power system and advocated for a stable regulatory framework to unleash its full potential while mitigating environmental impact. Mathilde Lallemand Dupuy, Policy Officer from the Directorate General for Energy of the European Commission (DG ENER), emphasized hydropower's critical role in providing flexibility solutions for the future energy system. Despite regulatory and financial barriers, she highlighted initiatives aimed at maximizing hydropower's potential. In subsequent thematic sessions, experts explored topics such as the value of flexible hydropower, multipurpose hydro projects, and the hybridization of hydropower with other renewables. Presentations showcased innovative projects and initiatives aimed at balancing energy supply and demand, addressing environmental concerns, and meeting future energy goals. Panel discussions further deepened understanding and highlighted the interconnectedness of long-term planning, flexibility needs, and environmental considerations. 🌊#Hydropower remains the largest renewable source of electricity, shows GRA member International Hydropower Association (IHA) in a new report. Sustainable hydropower plays a crucial role in meeting the global #3xRenewables target by 2030. Acting as the backbone for a stable and steady supply of clean energy for many countries and regions around the world, hydropower complements wind and solar power in a clean, secure, and just energy system. IHA’s new #WorldHydropowerOutlook provides crucial information on the state of this valuable energy source around the globe, highlighting that: 🔵 Hydropower is the largest single source of renewable energy and pumped storage hydropower provides more than 90% of all stored energy in the world. 🔵 More hydropower will be required to provide balance and flexibility when the wind doesn’t blow and the sun doesn’t shine. 🔵 Hydropower development must be carried out in a sustainable and environmentally responsible manner. This includes addressing concerns about the potential environmental and social impacts of hydropower projects, as well as navigating public perception. 🔵 In a world facing increasing climate and geopolitical challenges, policymakers and the industry need to act now. The world needs more hydropower projects, done better and delivered faster. 🔵 To double hydropower capacity by 2050, a cumulative investment of approximately US$3.7tn is required, or about US$130bn annually. This equates to more than double the current level of funding. The global hydropower fleet grew to 1,412 GW in 2023, but the five-year rolling average shows a downward trend. That’s why it’s #Time4Action for governments to work on #grids, #permits, #SupplyChains, and #finance to make it possible for the industry to ramp up the output of this vital resource. While I'm having a great time here at SXSW in Austin this week talking about marine energy, my colleagues Tessa Greco Corey Vezina Herbie Johnson and others are over at the National Hydropower Association supported Water Power Week in DC talking about investment opportunities in hydropower! "As the world continues to transition away from fossil fuels, low-carbon sources of firm power will be increasingly critical to maintain the electric grid's reliability. Hydropower already serves as a force multiplier for other renewable energy sources, and the value of this reliability and flexibility will continue to increase. Investors who understand this dynamic may wish to take another, closer look at opportunities to support hydropower projects." https://lnkd.in/eudWKCBJ
